| Golf notes: LPGA Legend Suggs honored Posted: 22 Sep 2010 02:01 PM PDT For the AJC Friends of Louise Suggs will break ground Saturday on a monument in Austell that will commemorate the life of the pioneer of women's golf. The monument will be on the site of what used to be the first tee of the old Lithia Springs Golf Course, which was closed around 1975. The nine-hole course was built by Suggs' grandfather in 1932 and she played many rounds there until the family moved to Carrollton. Suggs, 87, who currently lives in Florida, will attend the ground breaking ceremony, along with a representative of the LPGA Tour, which she helped create. She won 58 LPGA events and 11 major championships before retiring from competition in 1962. The event will be at the Lithia Springs Mineral Water offices at 2910 Veterans Memorial Highway in Austell. For information about the event, call (678) 895-0204. ... Cobblestone Golf Course in Acworth, one of the area's best public courses, has completed its renovation project. New sand bunkers, a new irrigation system and replacement of the old bent grass greens with Champion Bermuda restores the course to pristine conditions at a price of $617,000. The course, which has seven holes that play along Lake Acworth, also reshaped the greens to their original size, added new landscaping touches and cosmetic improvements to the clubhouse. Cobblestone, owned by Cobb County and managed by Affiniti Golf, has consistently been rated as one of the best public courses by Golf Magazine and GolfWeek. ... With six events left on the Nationwide Tour schedule, four players have two wins and can receive an instant promotion to the PGA Tour with another victory. Sea Island's Chris Kirk, Tommy Gainey, Martin Piller and Hunter Haas are one win away from being immediately eligible to compete in the PGA Tour's Fall Series. Kirk, the former All-American from Georgia, held the No. 1 spot on the money list for six weeks, but was overtaken by Jamie Lovemark, when the former Southern Cal star tied for seventh in Boise. Lovemark now has a slim $9,000 lead. Both are in the field for the WNB Golf Classic in Midland, Texas. The leading money winner on the Nationwide Tour receives an automatic exemption into the Players Championship. ...
