| Posted: 21 Sep 2010 08:16 PM PDT Southern golf edges Lancers BELPRE, Ohio — The Southern golf team made the most of a road trip to Oxbow Country Club on Monday night after claiming a slim two-stroke victory over host Federal Hocking during a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division matchup in Washington County. The Tornadoes posted a winning score of 222, which came up just slightly better than the 224 tally that the Lancers posted. Fed Hock also had two of the top three overall scores, but SHS ultimately had the top performances on the day. Andrew Roseberry led Southern with a low round of 46, earning medalist honors with his 8-stroke victory. Adam Pape was next with a 56, and the SHS duo of Dyllan Roush and Trenton Cook fired matching 60s to round out the team scoring. The Tornadoes also had efforts of 70 and 72 from Cole Graham and Brandon Marcinko, respectively. Austin Russell and Brandon Russell earned co-runners-up honors for FHHS with matching 54s. Shane Gillin was next with a 56, while Steven Coen rounded out the team score with a 60. T.J. Clemens and Zack Kider also had respective efforts of 66 and 71 for the hosts. White Falcons snap slump against Miller GLOUSTER, Ohio — The Wahama White Falcon Varsity Golf Team ended a 2 week scoring slump Monday afternoon with a win over Miller High School at the Forest Hills Golf Course. Wahama's winning score in the play 6, count 4 format was 168. Miller's final total was 193. The White Falcons were led by Sophomore Samuel Gordon and Freshman Michael MacKnight who shot identical 41's for the match earning each co-medalist honors for the contest. Another Sophomore, Dakota Sisk, finished just a stroke behind with a 42. Junior Kevin Back shot 44 to complete the scoring for the winners. Matt Arnold also played for the White Falcons, but his score was not included in the final count. Wahama did not have a 6th player in this contest. The young men from Miller showed considerable improvement since their initial meeting with Wahama. Back on August 26, in a match played at the Riverside Golf Course in Mason, Miller shot a 251 total. Their 193 total Monday was a 58 stroke improvement. Dakota McGill was the leading scorer Monday with a 44. Evan Pargeon followed with a 47 while Justin Hinkle shot 50 and Andy Jeffers added a 52 to account for the scores that counted. Colton Pargeon and Brandon Davis also played with their scores not part of the final total. Wahama's record in the TVC Hocking Division now stands at 8-4 with 2 league contests remaining on the schedule. On Tuesday, Wahama visits Eastern High School and Thursday will host Federal Hocking. On Saturday, the White Falcons will be the host team in the Riverside Golf Course High School Invitational. A total of 16 teams from schools throughout the area are scheduled to participate in the final tune up before the regional tournament which takes place on Monday, September 27, at the Big Bend Golf Course. Meigs falls to Buckeyes GLOUSTER, Ohio — The Meigs golf team had little luck with host Nelsonville-York on Tuesday night, as the Buckeyes posted a 20-stroke victory during a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division matchup at Forest Hills Golf Course in Athens County. The visiting Marauders posted a team score of 198, which was the second lowest team score that Maroon and Gold have posted this season. Still, the Buckeyes — with a 178 — still finished well ahead of the competition. Adam Kaaz led NYHS and all golfers with a low round of 40 for medalist honors, followed by Wyatt May with 43 and Derek Bowen with 44. Brandon Flores rounded out the Buckeyes' score with a 51, while Jarrod Bowers and McKenzie Oakley added respective rounds of 52 and 59 for the victors. Treay McKinney paced Meigs with a 43, followed by Dillan Andrews with 47 and Chase Hayes with 52. Gunner McKinney completed the team tally with a 56, while Paul Gibbs and Brayden Spencer added respective rounds of 57 and 62. Meigs will makeup a TVC Ohio contest against Vinton County on Thursday at Kountry Hills Golf Course at 4 p.m. This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php |
| GOLF: Grosse Ile sweats out narrow win Posted: 22 Sep 2010 10:20 AM PDT The Grosse Ile girls' golf team has easily taken care of Huron League opponents this season. However, last Wednesday Carleton Airport made the Red Devils sweat a little at Water's Edge. In the end, Grosse Ile escaped with a 201-208 victory, but not without a little excitement. "I was pleasantly surprised because I actually thought we were behind at one point," Grosse Ile coach Jim Bennett said. "It was awfully close." Brittany Burns led the way with a 45, freshman Katherine Kuzmiak shot a 49, Marissa Tissot had a 52 and Lauren Kosowski added a 55. "I think it's good for these girls to know that they do have to play because if a couple hadn't played as well as they did we easily could have lost," Bennett said. "When they're close the kids have to grind a little bit. They know it's close and I kept letting them know it was close." Grosse Ile bounced back to its normal wide final margins on Monday with a 203-249 win over Monroe Jefferson at Water's Edge. Kuzmiak shot another 49, this time to lead the Red Devils. Freshman Emily Bargardi was one back with a 50. "Those are two freshmen that are going to be really good over the next few years if they keep working at it," Bennett said. Tissot also shot a 50 and Burns finished with a 54. The Red Devils first team also played on Monday at the very competitive East Lansing Invitational. That group shot a 333 at Walnut Hills Country Club and finished second to Lansing Catholic Central, who posted a 322. Molly Esordi tied for first place honors with a 75. Alex Plemmons shot an 82 which was good enough for 10th place in the 120 player field. Marissa Piunti posted an 87, Christine Bonamici had an 89 and Caitlyn Hansen finished with a 91. "The 333 we shot was the second lowest round we shot all year," Bennett said. "I don't think we played particularly well. It was our second lowest round of the year, but I Just think we should have done better than that. I was really pleased with where we finished." Huron nips Milan Holding on for their second Huron League win of the season, the Huron Chiefs topped Milan on Monday 252-259 at Carleton Glen. Sophomore Liz Richert led Huron with a 57 and Alex Stach turned in a 63. "We normally play the front nine at Carleton Glenn, but we ended up playing the back nine and these girls have never seen the back nine," Huron coach Jim Garofalo said. "It was a little interesting for us, but all things considered, they played pretty well." Monroe SMCC was too much for the Chiefs last Wednesday at the Monroe Country Club, winning 193-267. Richert and Gabby Whided each shot 63 to pace Huron. "A very, very difficult golf course," Garofalo said of the front nine par 38. "They have four par fives on the front nine for the ladies. I felt as well as they played is as poorly as we played. I think the golf course intimidates the girls." Huron (3-5-1) plays Airport today and travels to Southgate on Thursday. Brandana leads Anderson Junior Amber Brandana turned in a personal best on Monday as the Titans outlasted Carlson 248-280 at Lake Erie Metropark. Marissa Flynn shot a 54, Brandana turned in a 59, Ashlee Carroll posted a 65 and Emily Pastor added a 68. "Our girls are getting a lot better," Southgate coach Ryan Grabetz said. "Somebody new is always popping up and playing good. Marissa Flynn has been really consistent for us, but after that, we've had different people contribute." The Titans host the Southgate Invitational Thursday at Wesburn Golf Club in South Rockwood. Trojanettes top Edsel Ford Nicole McKinney shot a 42 and Laura Bacso scored a 43 as the Trojanettes earned a 193-216 victory over Dearborn Edsel Ford on September 13 at Dearborn Hills Country Club. Beth Kell and Lauren McLellan posted the next lowest scores for Trenton, finishing with a 55 and 53 respectively. Belleville was too much the following day, topping the Trojans 209-215 at Lake Erie Metropark. McKinney again led the way, this time with a 51. Bacso shot a 52, Angie Scott turned in a 55 and McLellan added a 57. "I think the team is starting to exceed my expectations," Trenton Coach James Trush said. "That 215 last week was a good score for us." The Trojans travel to Southgate today and will participate in the Southgate Invitational on Thursday. So does Carlson Katie Coleman shot a 54 at Lake Erie Metropark Friday to help the Marauders top Dearborn Edsel Ford 241-272. Coleman earned medalist honors while teammate Sydney Miles finished with a 57.
