GOLF CAMP SET TO RETURN

(STAFF) -- Snow Valley Adventures Day Camp is offering a golf camp at Tangle Creek Golf Club from Aug. 9 to Aug. 13.

The golf camp will be run by Barrie-based golf instructor Murray St. Onge, coach of top-ranked Canada amateur Stephanie Sherlock, a Barrie native.

The camp consists of golf for junior-aged participants in the morning, where they'll be taught about the fundamentals of the game, as well as proper course etiquette. The camp shifts to Snow Valley in the afternoon, where children can take part in a number of activities, including swimming, rock climbing, boating and a rope course.

On the Friday morning, the golfers will play a round at Green Acres, where they can test their knowledge and skills.

For more information, or to register, call Trudy at 721-7669, ext. 2.

GOLF FUNDRAISER ON TAP

(STAFF) -- The Barrie Optimist Club and Barrie Soccer Club have teamed up for the fifth annual Give To Our Youth Golf Tournament, set for Friday, Sept. 17 at Innisbrook Golf Club.

The cost to register is $120, which includes 18 holes, a cart, steak dinner, silent auction, and various contests and prizes.

Money raised will go back into the community, to assist with the ongoing maintenance of the soccer club's property, and towards various youth projects in Barrie and the surrounding area.

The Barrie Optimist Club has been supporting youth projects in the area for more than 40 years.

Organizers are hoping to raise $20,000.

Those interesting in registering, or seeking information on sponsorship opportunities, can call Kim McNamee at the soccer club at 739-7844, or e-mail kmcnamee@barriesoccer.com.

PIGSKIN CAMP ON THE WAY

(STAFF) -- The Simcoe County Contact Football Camp returns to the gridiron this month.

The camp runs from Aug. 9-14 and members of the Toronto Argonauts will be on hand to help instruct young players. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend an Argos game.

The cost for the weeklong instructional camp is $150, with the money raised going to fundraising efforts at Barrie high schools.

Those interested in attending can call Burke Irwin at 737-5783.

ARGOS WON'T SIT BACK

(QMI) -- As the Argonauts prepare this week for the Edmonton Eskimos, they're not going to consider the fact the Eskimos are feeling a little bit better about themselves.

The Argos will be in Edmonton on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium to face a club that started to get its mojo back with a win against the B.C. Lions.

It was the Eskimos' first win of the 2010 season, and came after team president Rick LeLacheur was highly critical of the outfit's 0-4 start, its worst since 1965. The victory, in all likelihood, saved the job of head coach Richie Hall, but it did not keep general manager Danny Maciocia employed. Maciocia, who had become a lightning rod for Eskimos fans, was fired on Saturday, a day after the victory.

"It does not matter if they were 4- 0 or 0-4, it's just another opportunity for us to do what we do," Argos free safety Willie Pile said. "We can't worry about what they are doing, we just worry about us. We know what we have to do to get better, and we will put together a solid game plan."

The Argos were back at practice on Monday at their Erindale training facility after getting the weekend off, but not necessarily for good behaviour. In practice, they will try to erase the sting of getting clubbed 41-10 by the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday night.

And there's a good chance running back Cory Boyd can bounce back after a sub-par game against Montreal. The Eskimos are not good against the run, as they were last in most of the categories in run defence heading into Week 5. That should play into the hands of Boyd, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in three of the Argos' five games.

Against the passing game, the Eskimos defence has been much more effective.

The Boatmen have not won in Edmonton since 2007, and will get their first look at Andre Talbot, who was traded west during the offseason after nine seasons in an Argos uniform. Talbot had the game-winning touchdown against the Lions, his first in Eskimos colours.

The Argos last season lost both of their games against Edmonton, falling 22-19 in Week 15 at the Rogers Centre before getting crushed 36-10 two weeks later on the road.

The 18th Annual Haven LaForge Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at the Caney (Kan.) Golf Club on Saturday, Aug. 28.

With tee times from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the event will be in honor of Tammy Fleming's family.

Fleming, a 41-year-old Caney resident and mother of three, was killed in car accident on July 6.

Seventy-five percent of proceeds from the tournament will go to the family with the remaining 25 percent going to the Ronald McDonald House Foundation.

According to the LaForge family, who run the tournament, $43,000 has been raised since they began the event 17 years ago.

This year, there will be some extra help.

"We have been advised by Mr. Don Engelbert that ConocoPhillips will be donating $1,000 directly to the Ronald McDonald House Foundation in our tournament's name this year," said the press release put out by the family.

The Thri--Vent Association, a Lutheran group, will be assisting with food for the tournament, which will be hamburgers (a $5 dollar donation) and hot dogs (a $4 dollar donation.)

M. Golf. Kikkor Golf To Sponsor Husky Invitational

SEATTLE -- Washington men's golf coach Matt Thurmond announced that Kikkor Golf has agreed to become the title sponsor of the Husky Invitational, the annual collegiate men's tournament hosted by the University of Washington. The three-round tournament will be held from Sept. 20-21 at Washington National Golf Course and will be called the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational.

Kikkor Golf is an alternative golf footwear brand that targets the younger players at heart and was started by former UW player and 2005 NCAA Champion James Lepp. Lepp, conceived the idea in 2008 shortly after his competitive playing days were over and officially launched the brand in April of 2010.

"Being the title sponsor is a pretty big deal, especially for a company like Kikkor Golf that is fresh out of the gate," said Lepp, who shot a course record 7-under 63 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Md. during the final round of the 2005 NCAA Championship to force a playoff and eventually earn medalist honors.

"I would have never envisioned being a title sponsor this early in the company's development. And to be an alumnus of the UW golf team makes it that much more special."

Thurmond recognized the partnership was a win-win situation for both his program and Lepp's company and jumped at the opportunity to help out one of his own.

"We like to think of our golf program as a family, so when an alumnus of the team like James comes full circle and wants to give back the way he is for the Husky Invitational, it is really cool," said Thurmond. "We're excited to be teaming with James and his company Kikkor in this endeavor and think the participants will really enjoy the partnership. James was a great Husky on the course in that he was an NCAA Champion and All-American, so to see him and his company succeed after his playing days are over makes me all the more proud."

Players and fans in attendance will get to see Lepp's product up close during the tournament. Different styles of the shoes will serve as the tee markers at each of the tee boxes on the course and Kikkor Golf products will be available for purchase during the tournament with all proceeds benefitting Husky Golf.

"There really are many reasons [why I'm sponsoring the event], but at the root of all of them is the great relationship that I have with Coach Thurmond and the UW Golf Program," said Lepp. "After winning the individual NCAA crown in 2005 and then turning pro the following year, I always thought that I would give back to the program through professional golf. However, as it turned it out, it's the footwear company that I've started, Kikkor Golf, that has given me the chance to give back to the program a little bit...and of course gain some product awareness while doing so."

Besides Washington, the 2010 Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational field will include Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Texas A&M, Missouri, Idaho, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Pepperdine, Fresno State, BYU, Pacific and UC Davis. Admissison to the tournament is free.

Fans are encouraged to join the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational Facebook page where there will be some cool videos, contests, special promotions, and more leading up to the tournament.
