Golf fundraiser helps Oklahoma's WONDERtorium

STILLWATER, Okla. — A total of $5,000 was raised to benefit the Oklahoma WONDERtorium thanks to the contributions from participants of the 2010 Mighty Bullnanza golf tournament which took place recently at the Stillwater Country Club.

The event is a philanthropic tournament that benefits a worthy cause each year.

"The recipient of our philanthropy this year is the Oklahoma WONDERtorium," said Rex Horning, host of the tournament. "This organization is led and promoted by the most dedicated group I have ever seen. The Oklahoma WONDERtorium has taken the important concept of early childhood learning to a new level, the time and effort these folks have dedicated to help the growth of all children in Stillwater and Payne County is extraordinary."

Travis Ford, Oklahoma State University men's basketball coach, signed basketballs and ball caps as prizes and stepped in as a celebrity putter on the third hole. For additional donations from participants, Ford made one putt for each team and posed for a team photo.

Ruth Cavins, OWL executive director, said "we are thankful and appreciative of the gracious participants who played in support of the WONDERtorium."

"These gentlemen took play-to-learn to a whole new level.  Mighty Bullnanza 2010 was such a fun event, and certainly kept in rhythm with the Museum's mission of learning through play for a lifetime.   The amazing bulls were thoughtfully generous of their time and money on this day of play," said Cavins.

The Oklahoma WONDERtorium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to build a children's museum for north central Oklahoma.  Over the past four years 12,629 children have participated in Museum Without Walls programs offered free by the Oklahoma WONDERtorium.  Business offices are located at 1601 S. Main (Head Start Bldg.), Stillwater, Oklahoma, 74074.

Golf-Teenager Manassero keeps Italian flag flying high

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 10:09 AM PDT

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Teenager Matteo Manassero continued Italian golf's golden run with a sparking 64 to lead the European Masters first round on Thursday.

The 17-year-old, playing on an invitation, upstaged his 29-year-old compatriot Edoardo Molinari, outshooting Europe's Ryder Cup wildcard by two strokes to head the field by a shot.

Manassero needs good results in the last two of nine invitations he has been given to earn his European Tour full card for next year.

He lies 127th on the money-list with only the top 115 assured of 2011 playing rights and his faultless card gave him a good chance of completing the job by becoming the tour's youngest winner.

Manassero said Molinari, whose remarkable triple-birdie finish at Gleneagles last Sunday earned him a Ryder Cup wildcard, had inspired him.

"It was a fantastic finish, three birdies to win and get a pick, you might not see it again and if you do, it won't be soon," Manassero told reporters after his seven-under-par round.

"It's fantastic that Edoardo and Francesco (the younger Molinari brother who qualified automatically) are in the team and I hope they will have a magnificent Ryder Cup. Of course, it's one of my goals. I just need a few years to gain experience."

PAID TRIBUTE

Manassero also paid tribute to the first Italian to play Ryder Cup, 1997 Crans winner Costantino Rocca.

"Coming from Italy, we didn't know what golf was until Rocca," he added.

Finland's Mikko Ilonen and Briton Graeme Storm moved to within a stroke of Manassero.

A 66 by Edoardo Molinari—Francesco is not playing in the tournament - showed his remarkable stamina after pulling out all the stops to earn his Ryder Cup debut.

He now has a chance to be the first player on the European Tour this year to chalk up three wins.

"I'm good at getting energy back; I'm here to win again," Molinari said.

Thailand's Chapchai Nirat confidently holed a 10-footer on the last to finish in a group two shots off the lead and produce the best score by an Asian in the event co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour.

"My putting hasn't been very good but this week I changed my putter and today I did well on the greens, which are difficult," Nirat said.

"It's good for the Asian Tour to be here this week."

Spain's Miguel-Angel Jimenez, the other 2010 Ryder Cup team member in Switzerland, was three strokes off the lead.

Golf president ‘set up in sting by US customs’

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 06:55 AM PDT

A golf club president fighting extradition to the US over illegal arms trading charges was entrapped by the "lies" of US customs officials, a court heard today.

Retired businessman Christopher Tappin, 63, from Orpington, has been accused by the American authorities of conspiring to sell parts for Iranian missiles.

He has vehemently denied that he attempted to sell batteries, acquired in the US, for surface-to-air missiles in Tehran. If convicted Tappin, the Kent County Golf Union president, faces a 35-year sentence.

City of Westminster magistrates heard Tappin is a victim of a "state-created crime" and the US sting operation would have been illegal in Britain. As his extradition hearing opened today, human rights campaigners from Liberty demonstrated outside the court. They called on the Government "to honour its election promises to review and restore fairness to the British system".

In court Ben Cooper, defending, said US customs agents had used a bogus company, known as Mercury Global Enterprises, to ensnare Tappin into a deal carried out without licence or written government approval.

They sent paperwork to Tappin's Surrey-based business Brooklands International Freight Services stating "no licence required" and "this would not be a problem", said Mr Cooper.

Agents also told Tappin his business associate Robert Gibson had been injured in a car crash when he had in fact been arrested.

"The agents specifically told lies to entrap Mr Tappin. There is strong and compelling evidence of entrapment," said Mr Cooper. "It crossed the line of what may be deemed acceptable law enforcement tactics. This was a state-created crime and constituted conduct so seriously improper as to bring the administration of justice into disrepute."

But Aaron Watkins, for the US government, described the defence submissions as "artificial and incorrect". He told district judge John Zani: "I would invite you not to be distracted by what are essentially trial issues, not extradition issues," he said.

The extradition hearing was adjourned until November.
