| Golf month at Rivanna Golf Course Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT FLUVANNA - July is Family Golf month at the Rivanna Golf course in Fluvanna. The Rivanna is participating in the Play Golf America's Family Golf Month program designed to provide structured, yet casual opportunities for families to learn and play the game of golf together. On Wednesday, July 14, Saturday, July 17, Wednesday, July 21 and Friday, July 23, parents and their children ages five through 17 can participate in a special family golf clinic at 4 p.m. followed by golf on a six-hole, short, family-friendly layout. Following golf, families can enjoy a hot dog and refreshments. "Golf is a great activity for every member of the family, regardless of age and is a great way to get families to spend valuable time together," said PGA professional Daryl Daughtrey. "Thanks to initiatives such as the PGA Family Golf month program, golf has become easier and more enjoyable for the entire family here at The Rivanna Golf course." The cost is $20 per family and includes a short clinic, practice balls, golf carts, green fees and hot dog and refreshment after golf. Each family will receive a certificate of Family Golf Outing and a discount certificate for future range balls and greens fees. | Golf Courses Surviving the Heat Posted: 07 Jul 2010 06:56 PM PDT Golf Courses Surviving the Heat Grounds crews at Shawnee Mountain Inn and Golf Resort have their work cut out for them. The golf director says they are working extra hard to maintain the green in these extra hot temperatures. "We've changed our hours of work for most of the guys. They start at 5 a.m. now and they hydrate themselves really well. We don't take on extra projects in these types of temperatures," said Steve Taggart, Shawnee's golf director. The workers also make sure the green gets hydrated as well. The same goes for the course at the Delaware Water Gap Country Club. "We water every morning. Our superintendent has been in about two or three in the morning everyday trying to do it before it gets too hot," said Dustin McCormick, the head golf professional. To make sure the golfers stay cool, a beverage cart makes its rounds on the green, hydrating the players. They don't mind the heat. "The only thing you can do is wear light clothing, a hat and drink plenty of liquid," said Tony Mangan. "A lot of liquid, liquid," said Ponko Pivovar. As for golfers at Shawnee, they too admit only die-hard golfers will be caught in this weather. "I'm totally insane, totally insane. Why would I want to be out here today when I can be in on the recliner, watching TV in air conditioning," said Jim Vanhorn.
