| Golf notebook: Muscari wins Junior Amateur Posted: 08 Jul 2010 07:57 PM PDT Evan Muscari knew his best golf was ahead of him Thursday. "I hit on the range a little after the [first] round,'' said Muscari, who began the final round of the 35th Junior Amateur eight strokes back in 25th place. "I felt something. I thought I had a low number in me.'' Muscari, as usual, was right on target. The former Wyoming East High standout shot a 4-under-par 67 to force a sudden-death playoff with Fairmont's Tyler Hartzell. Muscari then birdied the first playoff hole to capture the championship at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington. Only players in the 15-18 age division compete for the overall title. "I started hitting the ball better and it felt great,'' said Muscari, a Pineville native. "It started from the range this morning. The putter was hot and that always helps.'' Muscari sank a 10-foot put for par on No. 16, lipped out a putt on No. 17 for birdie but settled for par and hit a wedge from about 90 yards away to within 2 feet of the hole on No. 18 for birdie, which eventually forced the playoff. Muscari flopped a 58-yard shot to 3 feet of the hole on the par-5 No. 1, then made birdie to complete the comeback. "It means a lot to come from behind that many,'' he said. "I thought I shot myself out of it the first day. I was just trying to work on a few things and it wound up getting the job done. It was a great round.'' Muscari only had two bogeys in Thursday's final round and opened with a 4-under 67 on the front nine. That was quite a contrast to his horrendous start Wednesday, when he negotiated the par-71, 6,446-yard course at 8-over 79 and sat in 25th place. "I was never in the fairway, never close,'' said Muscari. "My goal was to go out and clean my game up. If I didn't make any birdies, that was fine. My goal all day was make no bogeys.'' Hartzell followed up his opening-round 2-over 73 with a repeat performance Thursday to finish second at 146. It's been quite a year for Muscari. He won the Class AA individual state golf title in October. Muscari guided East to the AA state title game in basketball, where the Warriors lost to Oak Hill 55-45, then was named captain of the all-state team. Muscari, who will attend Furman on a golf scholarship this fall, will play in next week's West Virginia Open at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane. The tournament pits professionals and amateurs in the same field. Five Filters featured article: Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack On the Gaza Peace Flotilla.
