Golf clinics swing into Barren River

LUCAS, Ky. – To celebrate "Play Golf America Days" during July, Barren River Lake State Resort Park will be offering two golf clinics for adults and children.

The one-hour clinics begin at 5:30 p.m. on either Thursday, July 15 or Thursday, July 22.

In addition to the golf clinics, the pro shop organizes nine-hole golf scrambles every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. For only $17.50, you can pick your foursome or be paired with others to enjoy an afternoon on the greens.

The fee for the clinic is $25 per adult. Children 16 and under are free; more than one child may take part with an adult. Space is limited so be sure to register by calling the park's pro shop at (270) 646-4653.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park near Glasgow has a lodge, cottages, Driftwood Restaurant, golf course, fitness center, gift shop, fishing, picnic areas and hiking trails.

Golf cart stolen from Overlook Park

A $6,000 golf cart was stolen from a maintenance garage at Manheim Township's Overlook Park overnight July 3, police reported today.

Forced entry was made to the garage at 2040 Lititz Pike and a 2007 Club Car Turf 2 was taken.

Police ask anyone with information to call Manheim Township police at 569-6401 or Lancaster City-County CrimeStoppers at (800) 322-1913.

Irish girls denied by France in thrilling final
 

EUROPEAN TEAMS: Ireland failed by the skin of their teeth on Saturday to retain their European Girls' team title.

In a nail-biting final over Denmark's Aalborg course between the two outstanding teams of the championship they went down 3-2 to top qualifiers France.

For the first time in the five days of the tournament, the 15-year-old Maguire twins from Slieve Russell in Cavan did not find form, possibly exhausted by such a heavy schedule.

Both Leona and Lisa had been superb during qualifying and in the match-play rounds but after winning their foursomes in the final they lost their singles.

They gave Ireland a flier by beating Celine Boutier and Lea Charpier 3 and 1. Laura McCarthy and Stephanie Meadow lost their game. But it was still level at lunch with all to play for.

Lisa Maguire, playing at the top of the singles order, found Boutier too hot to handle, was always under pressure and eventually lost 3 and 2.

Meadow, from Royal Portrush, played some of her best golf of the week and was involved in a titanic battle with Manon Gidali with never more than a hole between them, Meadow edging home on the final green.

That levelled up the scores and it was all down to French Open under-20 champion Leona Maguire. It was a truly nip and tuck affair against Alexandra Bonetti, with Leona falling behind early on the back nine and going to the 16th one down. Steady play by Bonetti meant she could halve the last three holes and guide France to the title.

It was also a disappointing final day for Ireland in the other European championships, losing in them all.

They missed out on ninth place in the European Boys' in Turkey when they lost 3½-1½ to Spain.

In the men's team championship – an event they have won twice in the previous three years – the Irish ended up in 14th place after losing 4-1 to Norway.

And in the women's event at La Manga, Ireland also finished 14th after losing 4½-½ to Belgium.

CHALLENGE TOUR: A course record round of 62 – the lowest of his career – helped Austrian Bernd Wiesberger to his maiden Challenge Tour title at the Allianz Golf Open de Lyon.

Wiesberger had a 17 under par aggregate at Golf du Gouverneur, near Lyon, France, to take the title by two shots from the fast-finishing Joel Sjöholm of Sweden. Colm Moriarty finished on three under a final round of 69.

SENIOR TOUR: Englishman George Ryall fired a closing round 66 to capture the inaugural Van Lanschot Senior Open by one stroke and become the first non-exempt winner on the European Senior Tour in four years.

The 51 year-old from Portishead, who only sealed his place in the field after finishing tied fifth in last week's Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, held off the challenge of Andrew Oldcorn at Royal Haagsche Golf and Country Club.

Des Smyth finished tied fifth on 210 after a closing 70, with Denis O'Sullivan a shot further back after a 67.

US TOUR: Steve Stricker withstood a last round challenge from Paul Goydos to win the John Deere Classic in Illinois.

Stricker shot a final round of 70 to finish on a 26-under par aggregate of 258, holding off Goydos, who shot 66, by two strokes. Stricker had taken a six-stroke lead and a PGA Tour 54-hole record 25 under par into the last day after rounds of 60, 66 and 62. And he began his final round with back-to-back birdies but Goydos had narrowed the lead to four by the turn.

Golf: SAHS alumni tournament set for Monday at SCC

The 14th annual Stillwater Alumni Golf Tournament will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, July 12 at Stillwater Country Club.

Each year the event raises $5,000 to $6,000 for Stillwater Area High School.

The boys and girls golf teams help out with registration, and handling the money on par threes when players bet they can hit the green. The girls coach is Mike O'Rourke, who graduated from Richfield, but due to his efforts in this tourney he has been made an honorary Stillwater alumnus.

Through the support of the community, organizers have also been able to help a number of alumni who were in need due to health issues. They also try to make sure that alumni participants that lose a loved one receive a SAHS blanket - "a tradition of warmth and comfort."

This year's event will have players representing every decade at the high school since the 1940s - from most senior alumni John Beyer and Joe "Dode" Simonet (Class of 1941), to recent grads Katie de St. Aubin and Hudson Carpenter (2010).

The event gives the resent grads a chance to talk with alumni who graduated 70 years before them. These 1941 alumni are World War II vets. The kids can find out some interesting facts from them - some Stillwater high students were drafted into the war while still in high school. After the war they came back to school to graduate.

The tournament begins with a group photo of the 144-152 alumni. Then the group watches the group's most senior alumnae, Beyer and Simonet, perform the ceremonial first tee shot. After the golf shots comes the SAHS band playing the fight song. The herd of Pony alumni then head to the tee box to start the four-person scramble.

Meanwhile, there will also be a raffle that offers several items, including Pony head covers and SAHS golf bags.

Notable participating alumni are Judge Richard Ilkka (1980), WCCO meteorologist Chris Shaffer, and radio and TV personality Lee Valsvick. Valsvick's team of David Junker (1975), Mike Ritzer, and Kevin Milbrant won the event last year.

There will also be three generations of the Liberty family playing in Monday's event: Bob Liberty (1961), Jim Liberty (1980) and Jake Liberty (2007).

The first-place team gets the golfers' names engraved on trophy that is placed at the high school. There will be 18 flag events, so all golfers have a chance to win something.

The alumni and current students work together to make the event a successful tournament and fundraiser. A lot of grads play with people from their class, and organizers said it's a good way to "see old friends, reminisce and argue with other classes as to how your class is superior."
