MOBILE, Ala. (AP)—Se Ri Pak shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome and Wendy Ward in the Bell Micro LPGA Classic.

Pak, who opened on the 10th tee, had five birdies in a six-hole stretch on her final nine holes to top the second-round leaderboard at 9 under on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Magnolia Grove complex.

Pak won events on the course in 2001 and 2002.

Many of the players wore purple ribbons and wristbands with "EB" and a heart honoring Erica Blasberg, a 25-year-old tour player who was found dead in suburban Las Vegas on Sunday. The flag was at half-staff. Police have not said if they suspect foul play and the coroner said a ruling on a cause of death was pending blood and tissue tests that could take four to six weeks to complete.

Ward had the low round with a 65, six strokes better than her opener. Lincicome got off to a fast start with birdies on six of her opening seven holes, but had a finishing bogey for a 66. First-round leader Azahara Munoz (73) was 6 under along with Suzann Pettersen (70), Haeji Kang (69) and Sun Young Yoo (70).

Jiyai Shin, who took over the world No. 1 for the retired Lorena Ochoa, was five strokes behind Pak after her second straight 70. Japanese star Ai Miyazato, coming off her third win in the first five events of the season, was another shot back after a 71.

Michelle Wie made the cut by a stroke, following her opening 72 with a 73.

Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—Rain washed out play in the Texas Open and PGA Tour officials said more bad weather this weekend could push the tournament into Monday.

More than three inches of rain soaked the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, where leader Matt Jones and the rest of the field never got on the course. They'll try again Saturday, when Jones will start with a one-stroke lead over Paul Stankowski.

Jones opened with a 6-under 66 on Thursday.

Tournament officials delayed play for more than seven hours Friday before a late storm cell finally forced them to give up.

Regions Charity Classic

HOOVER, Ala. (AP)—Joey Sindelar, Bobby Clampett, Russ Cochran and Peter Senior shot 7-under 65s on Friday in the Regions Charity Classic to share the lead after the record-setting opening round.

The 77 players in the field had a scoring average of 69.519 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Ross Bridge course, breaking the tournament record of 70.397 set in 2002 when the Champions Tour event was played at Greystone.

Ken Green, playing his first stroke-play event since having the lower part of his right leg amputated following an auto accident in June, shot a 74. He had four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey while walking the 7,396-yard course.

R.W. Eaks, David Frost and David Peoples opened with 66s, and Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson, Corey Pavin and David Eger, coming off a victory May 2 in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, topped a group at 67.

Mallorca Open

SON SERVERA, Balearic Islands (AP)—Sweden's Pelle Edberg shot a 6-under 64 in stormy conditions for a share of the second-round lead in the Mallorca Open.

Edberg had seven birdies and a bogey in the round that was disrupted by lightning to join James Kingston (70) at 5-under 135 on the Pula Golf Club course.

GOLF / Rice DQs, quits Nationwide Tour

Posted: 15 May 2010 05:46 AM PDT

Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice was disqualified from the Nationwide Tour event Friday because his caddie used a range-finding scope to check yardages. The disqualification in Mill Spring, N.C. came a day after Rice shot a 92, the highest round ever since the BMW Charity Pro-Am began in 1992.

Rice announced after a second-round 82 that he's done competing on golf's Triple-A circuit.

"Because I can't commit to golf the way I want to, this is probably my last Nationwide Tour" event, Rice said. "These guys, they're working their butts off and they deserve to be out here."

Rice was in violation of Rule 14.3, which prevents competitors from using a yardage measuring device. His caddie checked the yardage scope several times during the round at the Carolina Country Club.

Rice made his tour debut last month at the Fresh Express Classic in Hayward, going 83-76 to miss the cut.

"Of course I have such a great memory about it," Pak said. "I play really well and the scores are really low, too. That helps a lot.

"I know so many holes, where to miss, how to play, how to make the shot. That actually helps a lot, especially during this week."

Many of the players wore purple ribbons and wristbands with "EB" and a heart honoring Erica Blasberg, a 25-year-old player who was found dead in suburban Las Vegas on Sunday. The flag was at half-staff. Police have not said if they suspect foul play.

Ochoa retires from golf in a wrenching farewell

Posted: 15 May 2010 04:02 AM PDT

(2 of 3)

With her husband seated in the front row, she spoke of the demands of the game — the tough schedule, the difficulties of staying No. 1. But she broke down when it came time to actually utter the words that she was leaving.

"Today begins a new stage," she said, her voice choking, her eyes misting. "Today is the most special day of my career. Every career has a beginning and an end. Ours has come."

Seconds later in the 12-minute farewell, she backed away from the microphone to compose herself.

"I can't continue," she said, pausing before resuming and offering encouragement to her compatriots.

"If I did it, I am sure many other Mexican men and women can do it, too."

Alejandro teared up in his speech. He recalled traveling with his sister and their father on the LPGA's Futures Tour, the developmental circuit.

"It was fun, it was exhausting going from town to town," Alejandro said. "Neither me or dad will ever drive so many miles again. And dad will never again iron as many of your uniforms as he did in those days."

Chance Cozby, the director of tournament player relations for one of her sponsors — PING — recalled Ochoa visiting the company's factory and befriending the workers.

"She said she wanted to go meet all the employees," Cozby said. "We've never had a player ask that. She went up and down the factory floor and introduced herself to everyone and took pictures. She came back a few months later and met for three hours with 1,000 employees. She took pictures and signed autographs for everyone. We were truly amazed."

Her brother also recalled that Lorena had failed her English exam for the University of Arizona, delaying her entry by a year.

"You had to wait another year until you passed the test," he said, ribbing her slightly.

Over and over, Ochoa said the "time was right" for leaving, going out on top and at home in Mexico.

"I took the decision because all the elements fell into place," she said. "I wanted to retire as No. 1, which I have been fortunate to be for three years. Secondly, I always dreamed of saying goodbye in Mexico, at home with my people. Finally, I want to live and enjoy the little things in life. I couldn't do this if I kept playing."
