HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP)—K.J. Choi kept up his stellar golf, even without Tiger Woods in his group.

Choi, who played with Woods in all four rounds in the Masters last week, shot a 7-under 64 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead at the Verizon Heritage.

Mike Weir and Greg Owen opened with 66s, and Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia and five-time Verizon winner Davis Love III topped a group at 67.

Choi and Woods tied for fourth at Augusta National, finishing five shots behind champion Phil Mickelson. Most of golf's best, including Mickelson and Woods, are resting after the Masters. Not Choi, who wasn't ready to end a roll that includes second- and fourth-place finishes over his past three tournaments.

Mojo 6 Jamaica LPGA Invitational

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (AP)—Cristie Kerr, Na Yeon Choi and Amanda Blumenherst each scored 13 points in their three six-holes matches to top the quarterfinal qualifiers in the inaugural Mojo 6 Jamaica LPGA Invitational.

Kerr received the top seed in the Raceway Golf event at Cinnamon Hill, and Choi took the No. 2 seed based on their positions in the world rankings.

Anna Nordqvist (12.5) was seeded fourth in the unofficial tournament, followed by Christina Kim (12.5), Brittany Lang (12), Suzann Pettersen (11.5) and Beatriz Recari (11.5). Pettersen and Recari advanced in a two-hole playoff with Angela Stanford.

Kerr, who will face Recari in the quarterfinals, beat the Spanish player 5-2 in the opening match, then tied Kristy McPherson at 3.5, and edged 15-year-old amateur Mariah Stackhouse 4.5-2.5. Choi, set to play Pettersen, beat Lang 4.5-2.5, tied Sophie Gustafson at 3.5, and topped Morgan Pressel 5-2.

China Open

SUZHOU, China (AP)—Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and South Korea's Kim Do-hoon shot 8-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the China Open.

Thongchai overcame an elbow injury that forced him to withdraw from the Masters.

Thongchai played alongside Ryder Cup captains Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie. Pavin shot a 67, and Montgomerie had a 72.

Jerry Rice Gets Clubbed in Pro Golf Debut

San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice might be a better golfer than you or me. But from the looks of his first day competing in a pro tournament, he won't get close to a green jacket unless he raids Craig Sager's wardrobe on Earth Day.

Rice is competing on the PGA Tour this weekend, at the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif. And after one day, Rice is in dead last place out of the 152 golfers competing.

Technically, there are four golfers who have withdrawn or been disqualified whom Rice appears ahead of on the leaderboard. But when a drunk and fat John Daly is razzing your performance from his motor home memorabilia stand in the parking lot, it's time to wonder whether you've become a laughingstock.

Rice finished Thursday's 18-hole itinerary at Stonebrae 20 points out of the lead and 12-over par. Dicky Pride finished the day in the lead. And you can wipe that smirk off your face right now, mister.

To Rice's credit, he's ducking no questions and taking full accountability on his PGA blog. "I got killed out there today," Rice wrote, following Thursday's rough debut.

The blog has video of Rice's round one performance. He misses the kind of putts you typically don't see missed in televised golf tournaments, unless it's Pebble Beach and Bill Murray is on his twelfth gin and tonic.

If Rice doesn't improve his leader board standing by an impossible 85 slots in Friday's competition, he'll be eliminated.

But say one thing for Jerry Rice -- even when he sucks at golf, he looks damn good doing it.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who would advise Jerry Rice to stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Local golf: Alabama recruit Cory Whitsett leads Terra Cotta Invitational

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 01:15 PM PDT

— Houston's Cory Whitsett fired a 4-under-par 68 and has the first-round lead in the Terra Cotta Invitational at Naples National Golf Club on Friday.

The left-handed Whitsett, who has signed with Alabama, birdied four of five holes to close the front nine, and added another on No. 11. He finished with a bogey on No. 18.

Augusta State's Patrick Reed and Stanford's Dodge Kemmer both had 69s in perfect scoring conditions. Nine players in the 60-man field broke par in the amateur event, in its 15th year.

Curtis Thompson, a brother of Nationwide Tour player Nick Thompson and 14-year-old phenom Alexis Thompson, is in fourth after a 70.

Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky., Charlie Blanchard of North Providence, R.I., Emiliano Grill of Argentina, Augusta State's Mitch Krywulycz of Australia, and Carter Newman of Evans, Ga., all had 71s.

Defending champion Matt Ceravolo of Palm Beach Gardens is in a large group at even-par 72. The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
