| Championship golf course attacked Posted: 15 Apr 2010 06:42 AM PDT | Police have condemned the "reckless" actions of vandals who started fires on an Angus golf course due to host the Senior Open Championship. Burning gorse bushes were discovered on Burnside Championship golf course at Carnoustie in the early hours. Tayside Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fires and no damage was caused to the greens or fairways. The Senior Open Championship is due to take place at the course between 22 and 25 July. Insp Kenny Hart, in charge of policing in Carnoustie, said investigations suggested the fires had been set by local youths. He added: "The Burnside Course here at Carnoustie is not only a local treasure, but one that is enjoyed by millions of golfers across the world who either travel to the area to play or who watch the Open and other golfing events on television. "I would urge parents to make sure they know what their children are doing at night and to know who they are associating themselves with. "What might seem like harmless fun to them could have devastating consequences on every level and the stupid, reckless and thoughtless actions of whoever did this could have major ramifications." | Democratic Party files complaint over Republican golf fundraiser Posted: 15 Apr 2010 11:20 AM PDT N.C. Democratic Party chairman Andrew Whalen has filed a complaint with the State Board of Elections that accuses Republicans of failing to properly document an October golf fundraiser. The complaint comes after a string of complaints filed against Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue by N.C. Republican Party Chairman Tom Fetzer. Whalen's complaint states that in October, the party held a fundraiser at Riverwood Golf and Athletic Club in Clayton. The club is managed by former Republican gubernatorial candidate Fred Smith. A round of golf, lunch and a reception cost $1,000 per golfer, according to the complaint. The reception was at Smith's home. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Plan to replace golf course with housing draws fire Posted: 15 Apr 2010 10:20 AM PDT
Geo-Energy Enterprises, which owns the Shaw-Nee Slopes golf course, hosted the third in a series of open houses Wednesday, showing off its vision for the site north of James McKevitt Road S.W. and west of Macleod Trail. The plan includes low-density detached homes, condominiums and a community centre, all "surrounded by trees, greenery and open spaces," according to the company's website. But the Shawnee-Evergreen community association held its own town hall meeting Wednesday, where president Gloria Dingwall said residents voiced strong opposition to the plan. "The issue is we bought into this neighbourhood because of the golf course. If you take that away and put 1,600 condo units then the neighbourhood you bought into is gone," she said. The association plans to make the fight an election issue, lobbying all mayoral and aldermanic candidates in the civic vote in October, Dingwall added.
The developer will be dealing with a new council and mayor by the time all the necessary applications are made to re-designate the area's land use status, said Les Humphrey, Geo-Energy's senior planning consultant. "We'll be dealing with all the aldermen and looking at the city issues in a comprehensive manner." Community feels mistreatedBut according to Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart, who represents the area, Geo-Energy has done a poor job so far, leaving the community feeling mistreated. "To assume and to go circulate their application to all my colleagues and kind of go around my back and go around the back of the community — we really feel that they disrespected us," Colley-Urquhart said. "This community really feels that they have been poorly treated by this developer." Since the developer proposed replacing the golf course with housing, the value of homes surrounding it has suffered, said area resident like Don Chudyk. "My house has gone down $100,000 in property assessment over the last year." But Geo-Energy's plan to replace the golf course still faces a tough fight, according to Colley-Urquhart. "They spent millions of dollars to buy a golf course. And that's really all they purchased here," she said. "This is the battle royale." Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
