Shiv Kapur, Chowrasia fall; midway in Andalucia golf (Hindustan Times)

Posted: 27 Mar 2010 12:16 PM PDT

Shiv Kapur and SSP Chowrasia had their campaign cut short in the Andalucia Open after they failed to make the halfway cut in the European Tour golf tournament.

Shiv followed his opening round of 71 with a level-par 70 and his 36-hole total of 141 was just outside the cut line set at 140.

Chowrasia'ss goose was cooked in the first round itself when he carded four-over 74 and even though the he came up with an improved one-under 69 in the second round, it was  not enough to hang in for weekend action. South African Louis Oosthuizen and Englishman Sam Hutsby, meanwhile, continue to go neck-and-neck and they turned in identical seven-under 63.

Golf notebook: Many area golf courses springing to life (Stillwater Gazette)

Posted: 27 Mar 2010 12:44 PM PDT

The golf season is off to an early start in these parts with a handful of area courses opening earlier this week.

Oak Marsh in Oakdale and Kilkarney Hills in River Falls were among the first to open on Monday and several St. Croix Valley courses have followed suit, including Oak Glen in Stillwater and Sawmill and Loggers Trail in Grant.

"We were swamped on Wednesday and (Thursday) was pretty decent," said Greg Stang, Director of Operations for Wilson Golf Group, which in addition to Oak Glen counts Applewood Hills in Grant and Turtleback in Rice Lake among its eight courses.

As with most courses this time of year, golfers are encouraged to call ahead to confirm availability and/or any restrictions. Oak Glen is running carts but they are required to stay on the paths for the next few days.

Stang said the course came through the winter in great condition and added the Oak Glen executive nine should open next week sometime.

"We'll be open here as long as weather permits," Stang said. "I think it's drier than people would expect, at least out here. You can't get out and cut anything yet, but the conditions came through very well."

Something new offered at Oak Glen this year are season passes, which are available for both the championship course and the executive course or both. Season passes are available for singles, couples and families with a variety of options, including such things as weekday only. This is the first time in several years the course has offered season passes. More information is available at oakglen.com.

Additional courses that have opened for the season include: Bristol Ridge Golf Course, Chisago Lakes Golf Course, Clifton Hollow, Goodrich Golf Course, Manitou Ridge Golf Club, Mississippi Dunes Golf Links, Oneka Ridge Golf Course, River Oaks Golf Course, St. Croix National Golf Club and Tanners Brook Golf Club.

StoneRidge ranks 3rd among Minnesota public courses

StoneRidge Golf Club in Stillwater has received high praise from Golfweek in its state-by-state rankings of Minnesota's public access courses.

The popular links-style course located just north of I-94 is ranked third among Minnesota courses as listed in the March 12 issue - matching its position from a year ago.

StoneRidge, which was the only metro-area course ranked among the top six, trails only The Wilderness at Fortune Bay in Tower and The Quarry at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Completing the remaining top-10 courses are Dacotah Ridge (Morton), Deacon's Lodge (Brainerd), The Classic at Madden's (Brainerd), Legends Club (Prior Lake), Rush Creek (Maple Grove), The Wilds (Prior Lake) and The Legend at Giants Ridge (Biwabik).

Troy Burne in Hudson is ranked ninth on Wisconsin's list - the only course in the top 10 that is found west of Madison.

Another area course - although not as readily accessible as StoneRidge or Troy Burne - landed on Golfweek's list of top-100 courses built before 1960. White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood is No. 60 on the Classics list.

White Bear Yacht Club was one of four Minnesota courses - all private clubs designed by Donald Ross - to make the Classics list. Interlachen Country Club in Edina leads the way at No. 51. The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis follows White Bear Yacht Club in 70th, which is up eight spots from a year ago, and Northland Country Club in Duluth ranks 87th.

Fresh off hosting the PGA Championship in August, Hazeltine National in Chaska is ranked 74th on the Modern list, which is for courses built since 1960. Windsong Farm in Independence also sneaked onto the list for the first time this year at No. 100.

Golf Minnesota Directory Issue celebrates 15 years

A publication that has been popular with budget-conscious golfers for years is celebrating its 15th anniversary with the recent printing of the Golf Minnesota 2010 Directory Issue.

Published right here in the St. Croix Valley by May Township resident Greg Wires, Golf Minnesota offers equipment reviews and other stories, including golf travel and course profiles from the Gopher State and beyond.

Some of the courses offering discounts this year include Madden's on Gull Lake - which offers an opportunity to play each of its four courses, including The Classic, for $88 - and the Meadows at Mystic Lake.

Closer to home, discounts are also available for StoneRidge, Prestwick, Kilkarney Hills, Sawmill, Tanners Brook, Clifton Highlands, Chomonix, River Falls Golf Club, Goodrich, River Oaks and Country Air Golf Park.

Break-in at Monroe County golf course investigated (The Toledo Blade)

Posted: 27 Mar 2010 04:15 AM PDT

TEMPERANCE - Monroe County sheriff's detectives are asking for help in identifying the man who burglarized the club house at a Bedford Township golf course and assaulted the owner.

The intruder, who was described as about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 220 to 230 pounds, used a crowbar to attack the owner of Maple Grove Golf Course, 6360 Secor Rd., about
9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The owner told investigators he returned that night to the golf course to find the intruder inside the building.

Detective Jeff Pauli of the sheriff's office said the burglar struck the owner on the arm with the crowbar as he fled through the door.

The owner pursued the man to the driving range, where the two men struggled, and the owner wrestled the crowbar from the suspect during a later confrontation in another area of the golf course.

The owner continued chasing the intruder as he ran south from the golf course property. He was last seen near Douglas and Alexis roads about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone who has information about the suspect is asked to call the sheriff's detectives at 734-240-7745.
