Golf report: Tiger a longshot for East Lake?

For the AJC

In previous years fans have sometimes been kept guessing about how involved Tiger Woods would be in the PGA Tour's playoffs for the FedEx Cup. This season the question is whether Woods will even qualify to compete for the Tour Championship at East Lake.

The playoffs, which begin this week with the Barclays in New Jersey, find Woods starting at No. 112 in the points standings, two spots worse that 50-year-old Corey Pavin. Woods needs a solid finish just to reach the second round, the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. Only the top 100 on the points list advance to the second round.

While the situation is dire for Woods, it's not so bad this year for defending Barclays champion Heath Slocum of Milton. Slocum barely got in the playoffs last year, won the first event and had a chance to win the FedEx Cup. This season he's starting from the No. 50 spot in the points standings.

"It's a completely different situation," Slocum said. "I'm looking to rekindle some of that magic, but I'm going in under a different set of circumstances."

Georgia PGA

Sonny Skinner will defend his title next week at the Georgia PGA Section Championship in Sea Island. He's hoping this time, it won't take three months to determine a winner. Skinner, a PGA teaching professional at River Point Golf Club in Albany, waited 100 days between the first and final round in 2009, when torrential rains prevented completion of the tournament on time and caused officials to cut the event from 54 to 36 holes.

Skinner, who recently competed in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, beat Marietta's Craig Stevens, an instructor at Steel Canyon Golf Club in Alpharetta, by one shot for the section title a year ago.

The Georgia Section title is coveted among the state's professionals because of the number of outstanding players among their ranks. Among those expected to contend this year are Tim Weinhart of St. Marlo, Jeff Hull and Matt Peterson of the University of Georgia Golf Course, Steven Keppler of Marietta Country Club, Clark Spratlin of the Georgia Golf Center, Billy Jack of St. Ives and Russ Davis of Cherokee Town Club.

A barman killed at a golf club in Oxfordshire was decapitated, police have confirmed.

Christopher Varian, 32, from Stone in Buckinghamshire, was attacked at the Oxfordshire Golf Club in Rycote Lane, Thame, on Saturday.

Jonathan Limani, 33, from Rycote Lane in Thame, has been charged with murder.

Det Ch Insp Steve Tolmie, leading the investigation said: "Thames Valley Police can confirm that Mr Varian died as a result of decapitation."

Mr Limani appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday and was remanded to appear again on 22 October.

Post-mortem tests showed Mr Varian died from serious stab wounds to the neck.

His family paid tribute to him, saying: "Chris was a wonderful person, everyone's friend. You could not wish to find a harder and more honest worker.

"He was truly a gentle man who wouldn't hurt a fly.

"His passing leaves a hole in this family which can never be filled or forgotten."
