Golf squad gets ready for 2010 season

Wednesday, August 18, 2010 3:21 PM EDT

Grayling High School's girls golf team - a group that started practicing last Wednesday and will play in its first meet this week - has a new head coach and a mix of experienced and inexperienced golfers.

As of last Wednesday - the team's first official practice of the year - the squad had eight golfers: Natalie Woodley, Ellie Smith, Logan Miller, Whitney Schans, Ann Hamlin, Heather Ruddy, Angie Rouston, and Kirstie Wakeley.

"It looks like we're going to have eight or nine," Coach Scott Baker said.

The team has eight scheduled meets this year, two of which will be played before school starts. The squad's first meet of the year is slated for Aug. 18 at Farwell. The Vikings will host the Grayling Invitational on Monday, Aug. 23, at 9 a.m. at the Grayling Country Club.

"It looks like the core group of girls is back from last year," Coach Baker said. "Ann and Heather will battle for the number one spot. A couple freshmen bring some golf experience to the team."

For Baker, this will be his first season coaching golf.

"I golf all the time. I love to golf," Coach Baker said. "Golf's probably my favorite thing to do during the summer."

"It's an exciting gig. It's going to be fun. I'm looking forward to it," Coach Baker said. "More than anything, I wanted to challenge myself to coach something I haven't coached before."

Golf scramble to benefit Wildcat football

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 11:21 PM PDT

The Wildcat Golf Scramble will provide the Deming High football program with funding that is aimed at pushing the Wildcat varsity football team toward another successful season in 2010.

The shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Rio Mimbres Golf Course. Teams will play in foursomes, and there will be plenty of perks for golfers and their guests. Those include a Wildcat goody bag before the start, a continental breakfast, a Mulligan string available for purchase and a progressive putt for a chance to win $5,000. There will also be a long-drive contest and a closest-to-the-pin contest.

"It's a lot of fun, but also a very important fundraiser for our football kids," said DHS head coach Fernie Holguin. "The money raised from this tournament helps us with team equipment, and it also helps out when we take the teams out of town and we can supplement their team meals."

Players can register for $75 individually, or as a foursome for $300. The registration fee includes a lunch following the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded for the first- and second-place teams, along with "The Honest Team" Award.

Players can sign up at the Rio Mimbres Pro Shop before Saturday's tee time.

"It promises to be a fun day for all who participate and a chance to meet our players before they get down to business to kick off our football season," Coach Holguin said.

Golf team is set to tee off

The Williston Coyotes golf team opens the 2010 season Monday at the Lifetime Eyeware Classic in Jamestown.

It will be the first athletic event for the new school year, marking an end to the summer.

But for the Lady Coyotes, it could be the beginning of a couple of special seasons on the golf course.

Williston only lost one player off of last season's team - Miranda Zavalney. However, the Lady Coyotes have no seniors on this season's squad. And all come back with experience.

"We have good experience back," said Williston golf coach Dennis Healy. "Five girls that golfed varsity are back." Kayla Barke is Williston's top returning shooter.

"She will have to step up to No. 1," Healy said.

Williston also has Cari Zavalney, Anna Peterson, Abby Wilt and Rachel Anderson back from last season.

As a team, the Lady Coyotes finished seventh at state. Healy says the experience should help the team build improve on that in 2010.

"It's tremendous," he said. "Every year, you get better, and we want to stay in the top 10."

Experience is an obvious strong point on this season's team, which should only help as the season progresses.

"They know over the years that they are playing the course," Healy said. "They know the most important shot is the next one."

An area of concern for Healy is the lack of summer tournaments, the Williston golfers took part in.

He says Barke was the only Williston golfer to take part in summer tournaments on a regular basis.

Monday's action will be the first of a two-day event in Jamestown, which will bring in 108 golfers from around the state.

"It's kind of a good measuring stick for our team," Healy said.

After Tuesday, the Lady Coyotes will then prepare for the Mandan Invitational set for Thursday.

The Williston Invitational will be held on Sept. 10.
