Golf trickster comes to Riverview Golf Course

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 12:06 AM PDT

KIRTLAND — Riverview Golf Course can get overlooked in San Juan County with the popular Piñon Hills Golf Course and the San Juan Open held just up the road in Farmington.

On Saturday, the spotlight will shift to Kirtland's Riverview as it welcomes one of golf's greatest talents and greatest inspirations.

In 1974, Dennis Walters had a dream to become a golfer on the PGA Tour, but a golf cart accident left Walters paralyzed from the waist down and his dream in jeopardy.

"There were times when I thought I would never play golf again. Actually, there were times when I thought I would never get out of the hospital bed again," Walters said of the days after the accident.

In less than two years, after a few adjustments to a golf cart and some clubs, Walters was playing golf again, but it wasn't the usual 18 holes.

"I had to come up with a way to play by myself, because as far as I knew there wasn't anyone else playing golf with the injury I had. So I invented all of the equipment I use today," Walters said.

During the next 34 years, Walters began performing trick shot shows that include a three headed club, a "machine gun" shot and a Judge Judy gavel headed club. Close to his 3,000th show, Walters has spread his message of achieving the impossible across the country and even learned a few things about himself along the way.

"I like to tell my people my story and challenge them to never let someone else say you can't do what you want to do. I challenge

people in the audience to do what they think may be impossible," Walters said. "When I started, I did it all for myself. This show enabled me to make a career out of golf but along they way, after getting some letters and hearing how people responded to the show, I realized my story may not be that different from other peoples."

To get Walters to Kirtland, the San Juan Chapter had to apply through the First Tee program and competed with 200 other programs throughout the world for a chance to watch Walter's live.

"We thought that if we didn't get it this year, we would for sure get it another year," Riverview golf pro Thomas Yost said. "But this is definitely a once in a lifetime chance for kids and other people to see (Walters)."

The First Tee program is based on nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, perseverance, confidence, courtesy, responsibility, respect and judgment. Walter's represents at least two of those core values, that Yost believes youth in San Juan County could learn and benefit from if they attend the show.

"Kids around here, some of them haven't been dealt the best of hands. Hearing how (Walters) was able to overcome everything he has, the perseverance to keep golfing and the confidence to put on his show with the injury, is something they can learn from," Yost said.

If you go

Dennis Walters' golf show will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland. For more information, visit www.denniswalters.com.

Golf course owner re-files bankruptcy petition, first foreclosure auction canceled

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 09:03 AM PDT

The Yerington Golf and Country Club, LLC, owned by Gary Spackman, has re-filed a bankruptcy petition, canceling a scheduled foreclosure auction on one of the two parcels on land on which the golf course sits.

An auction for a parcel of land that includes the clubhouse and three acres to the south of the golf course, was scheduled for August 6, but that sale was canceled when Spackman, who bought the property in 2009, re-filed the bankruptcy petition.

Another foreclosure auction for the parcel of land on which the golf course itself sits, is scheduled for next Friday, August 20.

Joy Taghiof, foreclosure officer for Western Title & Escrow, which is the trustee for the deed of trust on the property, said Wednesday morning she has not been notified of any bankruptcy filings and as of that day, the August 20 foreclosure auction was still scheduled.

Sam Ross, president of Title Service & Escrow in Yerington, the trustee for the clubhouse parcel, said last week's auction was canceled because the Yerington Golf and County Club filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Ross said a previous bankruptcy filing had been denied, but in such a way that it could be re-filed.

Ross also said a section 341 hearing, a meeting of the creditors, is not being scheduled until September 30.

"Nothing will happen before the creditors meet, and what will happen after that depends on how the judge views the previous case and takes everything into consideration there," Ross said.

Meanwhile, Spackman's short-term order to maintain has been terminated, and he does not have the right to enter the property, so the golf course continues to go unmaintained.

"It's a tragedy for this community, no doubt about it," Ross said.

Golf Course Closes Streets, Angers Residents

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 04:58 PM PDT

OLATHE, KAN - A golf tournament held up traffic in a metro neighborhood, and it left some Olathe neighbors steamed. The owners of Prarie Highlands Golf Course blocked traffic at three golf cart crossings, claiming exclusive rights to crossing streets.

Neighbors said it trapped them in.

"I felt like a resident caught in the crossfire, actually," said Michelle Mirakian, resident.

Mirakian lives in the Prairie Highlands subdivision. She said she was notified the night before that a golf tournament would require the street closings Thursday morning.

"They were simply flexing their muscles and inconveniencing us to make a point that they weren't able to do in the courts," Mirakian said.

In 2008 the owners of the Prairie Highlands Golf Course, Heartland Golf, sued the neighborhood developers, 215th Street Investors, LLC. At issue: disputed access between the golf course and the subdivision it winds through. That access crosses subdivision streets at three locations. But for the first time since the lawsuit was filed, neighbors said the golf course, acting on its own, shut down the streets, blocking them in for a time.

"It's very unfortunate that families who are not in this dispute between the developer and the golf course are being throw into the middle of it and being inconvenienced," said Tim Danneberg, City of Olathe spokesman.

Heartland Golf denied it blocked the neighbors, saying it limited only non-resident traffic. However, in a flyer handed out to neighbors, Heartland Golf claims, "during tournaments, and at other times in Heartland's discretion, the roads may be totally closed for golf course operations".

The flyer adds "...only emergency vehicles will be permitted access".

Olathe police arrived to keep the peace between frustrated homeowners and the golf course. The streets reopened at 10 a.m.

The city said it's currently exploring all options to prevent this type of disruption again, which could include a temporary injunction.

The trial in the dispute has been pushed back in Johnson County to early next year.
