Golf marathon raises $$ for coat closet

Sunrise in Arab at Twin Lakes Golf Club and seven men from Arab prepare to participate in a fund-raising golf tournament. It's not your ordinary golf tournament that you have seen advertised a hundred times. This one is different. It's a golf marathon ... a 100 holes of golf in a single day in 90 degree heat.

You have got to be kidding!!

Not for Barry Guess, TJ Guffey, Ty King, Jonathan Lynch, Ron Lynch, Dr. Randy Stewart and Jeff Fowler. All of these men paid a self-sponsorship of $100 to participate in the marathon. The self-sponsorship covered the cost of all-day golf, breakfast and lunch along the way, a steady stream of drinks and snacks and last, but not least, a whole lot of golf balls.

More than $8,000 was pledged to The Coat Closet, and pledges are still coming in so a final tally on money raised is not complete.

In advance of the marathon, each player secured pledges from family, friends and business associates per hole for every hole that they would play during the day. The sponsorship assured that all pledges would go directly to "The Coat Closet" and to aid individuals and families in need.

So what is the "The Coat Closet?" It's a charity established to distribute coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens and scarves (children through adult) to needy individuals and families throughout our community.

Last year, several of the local churches in the Arab community had their usual Thanksgiving Outreach Programs that provided traditional food items (including a turkey) for a family meal on Thanksgiving. They also provided some winter clothing.

Due to the on-going economic downturn and high unemployment, the number of individuals in the community needing assistance had grown significantly over the past year. There were reports of plenty of food, but the supply of winter clothing was exhausted and many went away without a coat.

And through the heartfelt desire of several men in our community, a charity was born.

Although the day was about golf with these men setting several records along the way - like raising awareness throughout the community and securing pledges that would assure an ample supply of winter clothing for this coming season.

To make a positive impact in the community, you can make monetary or other donations to The Coat Closet, P.O. Box 1053, Arab, Ala., 35016

New or gently worn coats can also be donated at the local Regions Bank branch.

Golf: Ben on comeback trail

BEN LEONG

BEN LEONG

MALAYSIAN golf prospect Ben Leong hopes a return to the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters next week will help him recapture his winning form.

The 24-year-old was on top of the world in 2008 when he edged Asian Tour kingpin Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand in a thrilling head-to-head duel to lift his first victory at the Selangor Masters.

But rather than build on the momentum of a career breakthrough at the Seri Selangor Golf Club, the former national amateur No 1 took his foot off the pedal and his form dipped dramatically.

"I have great memories of Seri Selangor," said Ben, one of three Malaysians who have won on the Asian Tour.

"It is always good to go back to the place where you won. Hopefully, I can get a second victory. It's my home country and I'm sure the crowds will be there to support me.

"The Seri Selangor course is always in great condition, especially the greens and I'm looking forward to it. I think I know every inch and every break out there and it will help me a lot."

The Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters, being staged for the third year running on the Asian Tour, is scheduled for Aug 4-7.

Such was Ben's dismal form that in 2009, he made only seven cuts from 16 Asian Tour events.

He said he took his eye off the ball and allowed himself to slip into near oblivion.

"I probably took things too easy after winning. I relaxed too much," he conceded.

Ben, however, insisted he has the game and willpower to succeed against Asia's finest at the Selangor Masters again.

At the end of last year, he visited his coach David Mill in Perth to right the wrongs in his game and the signs have been encouraging.

"I needed a second pair of eyes to look over my swing and David gave me some confidence.

"He knows what is right for me," Ben said.

His self confidence is starting to grow again, and it showed when he tied 12th at the Air Bagan Myanmar Open this year and then had three other weekend appearances from seven tournament starts.

"I think it (the confidence) is slowly coming back. You can't have it back straight away.

"I'm just trying to be patient. I have to trust my game," he said.

"I need to keep things simple. It's all in the head, it's all in the mind.

" After winning, you have to set new goals and try to get to the next level. You can't stay where you are. You just have to move up.

"Look at Thongchai ... he is always moving up," he said.
