PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- American Express Women's Golf Month kicks off in June, celebrating golf as a year-long sport and recreation for women. The national promotion seeks to provide people the opportunity to learn, re-learn or play golf in a fun and friendly environment while also attracting and retaining new women golfers.

More than 135,000 people nationwide have been introduced or re-introduced to the game of golf over the past five years during Women's Golf Month, which premiered in 2005 as Women's Golf Week, and statistics have consistently shown that 34 percent of these are beginners.

Held at thousands of golf facilities nationwide, American Express Women's Golf Month offers people 14 years of age and older free golf lessons and clinics and additional golf-related activities customized by each host facility throughout the month of June.

"We are looking forward to a fun-filled month celebrating women and their love for the game of golf," said Anne Lyndrup, Director of Player Development, National Golf Course Owners Association and leader of the Women's Golf Month organizers. "American Express Women's Golf Month provides everyone an opportunity to participate in fun golf activities, to play better golf with instruction from skilled PGA and LPGA Professionals, and also to have fun with friends while doing it."

Consumers can find a complete list of participating facilities, along with details on specific events and online registration, by state on PlayGolfAmerica.com.

PGA and LPGA Professionals are asked to promote women's programs currently offered at their facility and to consider adding new programs such as clinics, leagues, club fitting demonstrations, playing experiences and contests. Also new for 2010, PGA and LPGA Professionals may host or volunteer at a local Play Golf America Day in June or offer Get Golf Ready for Women programs at their facilities.

LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Fame member Nancy Lopez, PGA/LPGA Professional Suzy Whaley and fitness expert and philanthropist, Donna Richardson Joyner are all supporting American Express Women's Golf Month. They will attend selected women's Play Golf America events throughout the year and share their expertise as well as encourage women from all walks of life to learn and participate in the game of golf.

Whaley, along with PGA/LPGA Professionals from the Midwest PGA Section, will host a national kick-off event to celebrate the beginning of American Express Women's Golf Month at Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo., June 2 from 1-5 p.m. Joyner is hosting a golf clinic, June 5, in conjunction with her celebrity golf tournament held at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort and Golf Club in Aventura, Fla., to celebrate American Express Women's Golf Month.

Over the years, through programs such as American Express Women's Golf Month, many people have discovered that the game of golf can be used to foster relationships and encourage personal health. Whether one is spending time with colleagues -- socially or professionally, spending time with family and friends, or exercising while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the golf course, the game of golf provides the tools necessary for success in all aspects of life.

Participants who register on PlayGolfAmerica.com have the opportunity to win a set of Nancy Lopez golf clubs and American Express Gift Cards.

Local golf notebook: HGA loses big part of history

Message from Five Filters: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

The Houston Golf Association lost a major piece of its heart and soul last week.

Paul Wahlberg, who was president of the HGA in 1970, died May 24. He was 81.

"Paul is big part of our history," said HGA president and CEO Steve Timms. "He certainly was a major part of our charitable focus. He was kind of the face of the HGA for a number of years."

Wahlberg, who was a Houston native, graduated from Texas A&M in 1950. He served as president, honorary director and liaison with Houston charities for the HGA.

Wahlberg also funded construction of the Paul Wahlberg '50 Aggie Golf Learning Center, which opened in 2005 at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, and endowed a 12th Man Foundation scholarship.

"Paul Wahlberg and the late Earl Elliott were the heart and soul of the HGA for decades," said PGA pro Bill Pelham. "Paul was someone who made a difference in others lives. You don't see that too often."

Until his stroke in 2004, Wahlberg helped the HGA in a number of difference capacities.

"He was the guy who kind of kept things in order out on the golf course (during the Shell Houston Open)," Timms said. "He was always there for us. But I think the main thing was he was so dedicated to the charities we support."

Timms said Wahlberg was a "very caring person."

"He was very driven and very active before he had his stroke," Timms said. "He was extremely active not only in the architectural business, but in volunteer life in the Houston Golf Association."

Wahlberg's son, Jeff Wahlberg, was overwhelmed by the support he received after his father's death.

"I talked to Jeff (before the funeral) and he just couldn't believe how many people had so many nice things to say about his dad," Timms said.

The HGA dedicated an award to Wahlberg in 2003 called the "Paul Wahlberg Helping Hand" award.

"We don't give it every year," Timms said. "But we give it out to people who give dedicated service to the HGA, PGA Tour and golf and golf charities in Houston."

The HGA also awards the "Earl Elliott HGA Member of the Year" and the Terry Russ "Shell Houston Open Volunteer of the Year."

"Earl Elliott was another major force in the HGA," Timms said. "That award goes to the member who has show exceptional service in all areas of operation.

"The Volunteer of the Year award is given to an HGA member who has been an outstanding volunteer member," he added. "Those three guys have meant so much to our organization."

Romo coming to qualifier

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will be one of 45-50 golfers trying to earn one of the final two spots into the U.S. Open at the sectional qualifying tournament on Monday at The Club at Carlton Woods' Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in The Woodlands.

Romo qualified for the sectional tournament by winning a playoff in the regional qualifying tournament in Dallas.

Rice's Michael Whitehead also will be in the field, as well as several former and current PGA professionals.

The top two players will advance to play in the U.S. Open on June 17-20 at Pebble Beach.

Dickson plays Senior PGA

The Woodlands Country Club head professional Jim Dickson was asked to play in last week's Senior PGA Championship at the last minute.

"At 10:30 a.m. (Thursday), I got a call from the PGA asking me if I could be in Denver by 2:15 to play in the Senior PGA championship," Dickson said. "It seems that I was on the alternate list from finishing 50th in the National Senior Club Professional Championship last November."

Dickson said he scrambled around and found a flight that would get him to Denver at 1:40 p.m.

"But I just couldn't make it to the first tee in time," he said. "The funny thing is, I would have played with Nick Price and Tom Lehman."

Wait, there is more.

"Even more funny is that my golf clubs are not conforming so I would have done all this work and spent all that money and been disqualified on the first tee."

Dickson has played in six major championships. Er, make that 6 1/2.

Tourney raises money for troops

The Woodlands Country Club raised more than $34,000 in its annual Memorial Day golf tournament.

A total of 132 players participated in the event. All proceeds will go toward the troops.

Volunteers also packed more than 140 boxes of donated items and sent them to the troops.

Woodforest to host junior camps

Woodforest Golf Club will host three separate junior golf camps from 9-11 a.m. on June 15-18, July 19-22 and Aug. 9-12.

Cost for each camp is $180. Camps are open to boys and girls between the ages of 6-15.

For information, call Dan White, 281-642-4436.

Golf and football collide in Canton, Ohio

Pro Football Hall of Fame

As the PGA Tour returns for its annual stop in Dublin, Ohio for the Memorial Tournament this week, the golf spotlight gleams once again on the Buckeye State.

While the golfing world may shine bright over Ohio this week, Tiger and the rest of the field are only an earshot away from the ghost of footballs past.

Most golfers are sports fans, and there are a couple pilgrimages that true American sports fans should make.

One is to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The other is the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Each summer, the Pro Football Hall of Fame welcomes a new class of inductees. The annual Hall of Fame Game culminates the event, which encompasses a week of activities in early August.

It's the first NFL preseason game of the year, and it's the signal that all is right with the world, as most National Football League fans would agree.

But even if you're not attending the game, a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame is still inspiring, no matter what time of year you go. From the busts of Vince Lombardi to Roger Staubach, the Hall chronicles more than a century of pro football's history, the great teams and the sport's legendary players, seasons and moments.

You could even combine it with a ticket to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, about an hour north in Cleveland.

If your summer travels take you to the Pro Football Hall of Fame or the NFL's Hall of Fame Game, don't forget your golf clubs.

While Canton itself is less than 100,000 in population, there are a number of exceptional public golf venues to play. And Ohio summer temperatures are ideal for golf.

One of the nicer courses in the area is The Quarry, a semi-private course that plays more than 7,000 yards from the tips.

Just minutes from downtown Canton, the course, which opened in 2006, was built on a 100-plus-year-old old quarry. The holes are routed around natural waste areas, 100-foot cliffs, streams and lakes. Although many of the shots are visually intimidating, the landing areas are bigger than they look, making The Quarry very playable.

Sanctuary Golf Club, which opened in 2002, is in North Canton. Designed by Brian Huntley, the golf course has bentgrass greens, tees and fairways. It also has five sets of tees and can be stretched to 6,811 yards.

Not too far from The Sanctuary is the Fairways of North Canton. Formerly private, the course, which opened in 1948, features a narrow front nine and hilly back nine.

Out in the country in between Canton and Akron, Ohio, you'll find Raintree Country Club, which is open for public play. Opened in 1992, Raintree has a mix of traditional and links style holes. Water comes into play on half the holes.

Seven Hills Country Club, in nearby Hartville, is also public. The 18-hole track offers plenty of trees, water and bunkers along with good, fast greens and well maintained fairways.

Opened in 1928 and located just minutes from the Hall of Fame, Tam O'Shanter Public Golf Course in Canton has two 18-hole courses. The Dales Course is the longer and the flatter of the two. The Hills Course features undulating greens. Both are par 70s.

Getting to and staying in the Canton area

Besides the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the area is also home to the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, the National First Ladies Historical Site and Ohio's Amish country.

Canton has a number of bread and breakfast hotels as well as the major chains, so there's plenty of lodging. There are also plenty of bars and grills, including the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant, which is designed to resemble a World War II stronghold, complete with military vehicles, aircraft parts and sandbagged walls.

You can fly into the Akron-Canton Airport in North Canton on AirTran, Delta, Frontier, Northwest Airlink, United Express or U.S. Airways. By car, you can get to Canton on Interstate 77 to the north and south or Highway 30 from the western part of Ohio.
