Golf course reopens, wave pool still closed

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 09:14 AM PDT

SEGUIN — The Starcke Park golf course escaped significant damage Wednesday when heavy rains north of the city sent the Guadalupe River surging out of its banks.

The course, which was closed Wednesday and Thursday because of the flood, will reopen Friday morning for a tournament that will bring almost 100 golfers to town.

"The number four and number five holes had water on the greens and some of the fairway," said Richard Hansen, assistant manager of the golf course, adding that tournament players probably will be asked to keep their carts on the cart path for those two holes.

"The rest of the course is fine," Hansen said.

While the course was closed Thursday, city workers were cleaning up the parking lot and golf course workers were out on the course taking care of any apparent problems. Hansen said no floodwaters entered the pro shop.

The event scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Friday is known as the East Central Tournament. Participants are coaches from the San Antonio area, and 96 of them have signed up for this year's tourney, Hansen said.

On the east side of Starcke Park, the wave pool was closed Thursday, and city officials were uncertain how soon it would reopen.

"We're looking at getting it up and going, but they've got to get the silt out," a Parks and Recreation Department employee said.

Golf Fore the Cure returns to Golden

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:14 AM PDT

Local female golfers will convene at The Golden Golf Course on Tuesday July 13, to participate in the Pink Patrol - Golf Fore the Cure Golf Tournament in support of the fight against breast cancer.

The more than 50 local golfers , spearheaded by event organizers Carol Penno and Joyce Nixon, have raised over $10,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society over the past three years while the Golf Fore the Cure program has raised more than $2.5 million for breast cancer research nationally since the program began in 2003.

Presented by Subaru, Golf Canada's Golf Fore the Cure program is aimed at growing women's golf participation in Canada by introducing the game through fun, non-intimidating activities.

"We have had so much fun working together to help raise these much needed funds for the Canadian Cancer Society," said tournament co-ordinator Carol Penno. "The event promises to be a great day. We enjoy golfing, but Pink Patrol is just as much about having a good time as it is about golf."

Funds contributed to the Golden event are returned to the East Kootenay region. Ladies from the community who are not club members are invited to come and participate too. The usual nine hole green fee will apply for non members. Pledge sheets are available from Carol Penno.

"We invite those who would have sponsored the Relay for Life to turn their donations towards our cause. The local golfers are seeking pledges."

Proceeds from more than 260 sites across the country contribute to this national fundraising initiative and are donated to the Canadian Cancer Society as well as the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

More information about Pink Patrol is available by contacting Carol Penno 250-344-6217. Information about Golf Fore the Cure is available online at www.golfcanada.ca/golfforethecure or by contacting Jessica Small at jsmall@golfcanada.ca or toll-free at 1-800-263-0009 ext. 495.

Golf Canada's Golf Fore the Cure program, presented by Subaru, is a program aimed at growing women's participation in the game of golf through fun, non-intimidating golf related activities. As a unique element to the program, a partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation allows women from across the country to participate in golf activities and raise money for a cause close to all women's hearts – breast cancer research.
