Golf courses welcome women this month

Posted: 13 Jun 2010 03:26 AM PDT

Two Salem-area golf courses are inviting women of all skill levels to participate in Women's Golf Month.

OGA Golf Course in Woodburn and Spring Hill Country Club in Albany are the only two courses in the Salem area participating in the nationwide event, according to PlayGolfAmerica.com.

"Our goal is to grow the game of golf," said Brian Weaver, head pro at OGA Golf Course.

"The clinics are a great way for women to improve their game in an environment where they can associate with other gals."

Throughout June, OGA will offer clinics that focus on all aspects of the game, including putting, chipping and sand play.

The clinics are Thursday mornings from 8-9 a.m. and cost $10 per student.

Spring Hill Country Club will have its Women's Golf Month clinics in July. The course is offering free beginner lessons on Tuesday nights throughout the month.

The clinics focus on all aspects of the game, including basic swing, chipping and putting.

"Women's Golf Month makes it easier, especially for beginners, and not make it so intimidating," said Bill Raschko, head pro at Spring Hill Country Club.

"It helps give beginners the confidence in their golf game and more experience on the putting greens, the driving range and on the course."

Women's Golf Month began in 2005 and more than 135,000 women have been introduced or re-introduced to the game according to event sponsors.

Participants who register on PlayGolfAmerica.com have an opportunity to win a set of Nancy Lopez golf clubs and American Express gift cards.

Golf event, blues concert to fund cancer research

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 06:08 PM PDT

The Northstar Golf Club, 1150 Wilson Road, Sunbury, will host a blues concert and golf outing to raise money in the battle against breast cancer.

The second annual "Summertime Blues for a Cure" will be held June 25 to 27 and benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and the IMPEDE (Importance of Prevention and Early Detection) Program at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The fundraiser is organized by Sean Carney's Blues for a Cure, a charitable organization founded in 2007 by Sean Carney, Mark Puskarich and Mike Berichon to assist with cancer research fundraisers, Puskarich said in an e-mail.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. on June 25 with several performances, including the Matt O'Ree Band from New Jersey. O'Ree was the national champion in the 2006 Guitar Center "Guitarmageddon" contest. Tickets for the show are $10.

A golf scramble will be held at 11 a.m. on June 26. After the event, all participants will be served a southern style-barbecue dinner from Shane's Rib Shack.

At 6 p.m. on June 26, participants will be treated to more blues performances, including the Sean Carney Band, with special guest Little Charlie Baty. During an intermission, Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, will share news on the latest research.

Grady Memorial Hospital officials will share the latest information on the IMPEDE program.

The fundraiser will feature a live auction, including a Worthington Industries-donated corporate suite for 12 people to attend a Columbus Clippers game at Huntington Park, a guitar signed by all the musicians performing at the fundraiser, and an Epiphone guitar signed by B.B. King.

Sunday, June 27 will feature a blues performance by Janiva Magness, who was awarded Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year at the 2009 Blues Music Awards. This will be Magness' first performance in central Ohio. Tickets to the performance cost $20.

For more information, including prices and registration, call Mark Puskarich at (614) 906-4700.

A similar event was held last year, Puskarich said.

"It was only a one-day event and raised $19,500 for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the James and Grady Memorial Hospital's IMPEDE program," he said.
