IT was badly damaged by Cyclone Ului in March, but Mackay Golf Club members have banded together to make their course playable.

Mackay Golf Club secretary manager Neil Dougherty, Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt, president Bill Cooper, volunteer Dave Hiskins and member Barry Richards help repair the course.

IT was badly damaged by Cyclone Ului in March, but Mackay Golf Club members have banded together to make their course playable.

All they need now is new bunkers, and that's where the State Government is swinging in to help.

The club has been given $20,000 by the Queensland Government's sport and recreation disaster recovery program to repair bunkers and remove trees, bringing the club back to its true glory.

The course was in great condition yesterday, a far cry from March when 600 trees were damaged, and almost 300 fully knocked down, as Ului released its force on Mackay.

However, after 16 days the course was playable again, thanks to the overwhelming effort of golfers and Mackay residents who came on their days off, afternoons and weekends, all the while dealing with their own problems related to the cyclone.

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt congratulated the Mackay Golf Club and thanked all the volunteers involved.

"It is a real reward for the club and everyone who helped out," Ms Jarratt said.

"This is a beautiful golf course and it is looking fantastic."

Mackay Golf Club manager Neil Dougherty said the funding would go a long way to fixing the bunkers and fairways at the popular Mackay club.

"The whole community benefits from our club; the volunteers have worked so hard, but there is still more to do and it's very expensive.

"That's where this money comes in handy," Mr Dougherty said.
