| Sligo Creek golf club to stay open; plans, funding still undetermined Posted: 08 Jun 2010 09:00 PM PDT Message from Five Filters: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. "Everyone is trying to find a way to keep it open," said Keith Miller, head of the revenue authority, which operates Montgomery's nine public golf courses and its airport in Gaithersburg. He said some details remain to be worked out with M&T Bank, the trustee for the agency's revenue bonds. "All banks are nervous these days," he said. Miller said plans are in the works for an operating agreement that would extend at least to November and most likely for the next few years. The decision removes a contentious issue from public debate a few months before the Sept. 14 political primaries. But it raises other questions about county priorities at a time when elected officials are making the first budget cuts in 40 years and furloughing county employees. Funds to keep Sligo open through the fall are expected to come from the course's revenue over the next few months -- the peak golf season -- but other expenses, such as repairs to the sprinkler system and improvements to the clubhouse, would need to come from other sources in the county's budget. Sligo is one of a handful of inside-the-Beltway golf courses and the only nine-hole course remaining in Montgomery County's publicly run system. Its supporters say it has the most diverse clientele of any county course and is considered especially welcoming to women, minorities and beginners. Sligo's backers have mounted a sophisticated campaign to keep the course open, challenging the revenue authority's bookkeeping and accounting. They complained that Sligo was slated for closure when other county golf courses, also suffering financially, were not being similarly scrutinized. Miller has said that the long-term financial prospects for nine-hole courses are not as bright as they are for the county's other courses, each with 18 holes. Miller has been seeking ways to stanch losses at the county's courses. He had proposed adding a driving range to Sligo with night lights and a miniature golf course, but neighbors objected. He then announced that the course would close last fall. But County Executive Isiah Leggett (D), who was besieged with complaints about the decision to close the course, asked the County Council to approve $150,000 last summer to keep Sligo open through June 30. A report from a county task force suggested finding an outside operator to run it, but the council has not formally reviewed the recommendations. Woody Brosnan, a task force member and a Sligo Creek golfer, said the course's fans would not rest until a deal is signed. "People in our group will say, 'Well, that is nice, but are they just putting it off until after the election, and then they will close it?' " he said. "I guess we welcome the news, but with some bit of caution."

| Golf tournament effective for promoting tourism in Indonesia: executive Posted: 08 Jun 2010 09:23 PM PDT Message from Five Filters: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. Prestigious golf tournaments are effective to promote tourism in Indonesia as they are widely covered by televisions and watched by millions of people worldwide, an executive told Xinhua in a recent interview. Ben Sellenger, Chief Executive Officer of OneAsia, a tournament arranger for elite professional golfers across Asia Pacific, said that Indonesia's beauty and golf tournament is a right combination to promote the country's tourism. "The capital city of Jakarta has many world-class golf courses and in the other side, Indonesia is a beautiful country. What we do here is to provide a great platform for promotion. And, this will provide wide coverage,"said Sellenger. He said that good image of Indonesia will attract tourists and what the country needs is an efficient promotion. Indeed, he said, people who watch golf tournaments directly will not be a lot. "But that's not the main point. The point is that televisions across the world will cover the tournaments. Asian people love to watch golf. People from Singapore, Japan, China and South Korea watch golf tournaments in television. And that's not the only thing they air. Television will air the beauty of Indonesia also. Then, in holidays, Asian people will come here as tourists, not only to Jakarta but to other tourism destinations, spending money, that is good for the economy," he said. He took an example of Indonesia Open, a golf tournament scheduled for July 1-4 in Jakarta that will be covered by OneAsia television network. "With other OneAsia's tournaments this season, Indonesia Open will be aired live for four hours a day in its four day-tournament to more than 260 million of homes in 40 countries worldwide," he said. He said the fact that many golf tournaments are sponsored by local tourism board is one of proofs that golf is an efficient way to promote tourism. "The local tourism boards recognize that people love to watch golf. So, they are willing to be main sponsor of golf tournaments. They realize that golf is a good tourism promotion tool across the globe," said Sellenger. Indonesia will hold a regional golf tournament of the Indonesia Open on July 1-4 with total prize of 1 million U.S. dollars. The professional golf event is collaboration between the Enjoy Jakarta, a travel and tourism program of the capital city government of Jakarta, the Ministry for Culture and Tourism and OneAsia.
