| Golf: Freshman class sparking UNT golf Posted: 26 Apr 2010 06:41 AM PDT A few months is all it took for the North Texas golf team's freshman class to vault itself into the national elite. Carlos Ortiz and Rodolfo Cazaubon have been two of the Mean Green's top players all year long. Throw in Curtis Donahoe and Marco Scarola and UNT has what might be its most impressive freshman class in any sport in several years. UNT is hoping the combination of that freshman class and a few key older players, including senior Dustin Thompson, will put it in the hunt for the Sun Belt Conference title when the league tournament begins today at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala. "We feel really good going into the tournament," Thompson said. "We won a tournament early in the season, which really helped our confidence. We feel like we are the favorite." UNT won the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate, an 11-team event in February and has finished in the top 10 of five straight tournaments since. That run of success has been due in large part to UNT's freshman class that is ranked third in the latest Golf Stat rankings. The Mean Green has three players among its top five who are combining to post an average of 74.33 per-round average. The Mean Green is hoping those players maintain their level of play when the pressure is at its highest in the conference tournament. "Hopefully, it will be just another tournament for those guys," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "They are prepared and have played in a lot of events. As long as they go about it the same way they have the whole year, we will be better off than if they go in thinking that it is the conference tournament and we have to win." Stracke credited the success he had in putting the class together to searching far and wide for the top young players both in the U.S. and beyond. Ortiz and Cazaubon are both from Mexico. "We were fortunate to get the two kids from Mexico who were highly ranked," Stracke said. They have played well all year and improved." Stracke credited the way his young golfers have adapted to college to players like Thompson, who have provided guidance along the way. "We didn't have to show the younger guys much about golf, it was more about discipline and how to handle college and golf at the same time," Thompson said. Those players have made the adjustment and helped put UNT in the position where it thinks it can make a run at the conference title. "You can see how much we have improved in the rankings," Thompson said. "We feel like we can win now." BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. His e-mail address is bvito@dentonrc.com .
