| Golf club expansion plan rejected Posted: 02 Apr 2010 06:19 AM PDT | Environmental campaigners are celebrating after a North Lincolnshire golf club was told it could not expand into ancient woodland. Original plans for expansion at Forest Pines golf club near Scunthorpe were rejected by councillors in 2008. The club appealed but after an eight-day inquiry The Planning Inspectorate upheld the refusal. The Woodland Trust said it was relieved. The club said the decision was a "real blow for the area". Under the plans Forest Pines would have got a further nine holes and be of a standard to host future international golf tournaments. The Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth said they did not object to the club's expansion, but to the location of the expansion because the woodland should be protected. Nikki Williams, head of campaigning for the Woodland Trust, said: "We're a very small team in not a particularly big charity that have had to take this on so to know that all your hard work and all your effort has come to such a brilliant outcome is really relieving. "Ancient woodland is not like normal woodland, it is wood that's been here for hundreds and hundreds of years. "It's very precious land so only certain things grow in them, only certain things live in them and it means that they become really our rainforest, the equivalent in the UK of the rainforest. "If they're lost you can't put them back, so that's why it's so valuable." Chris Cottam, Managing Director of Forest Pines, said: "It's a real blow for the area. "It doesn't seem to make any sense whatsoever. We were creating 60 jobs and we had chances of bringing major international and global tournaments to the region." Mr Cottom said the club's owners were now assessing their options. Print Sponsor Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
| World's most expensive golf cart priced at $52,000 Posted: 02 Apr 2010 08:42 AM PDT The world's most expensive golf cart is set to roll out of the Porsche factory in Finland, with a price tag that makes the Boxster look like a steal, it was revealed Friday.
As if golf didn't have a reputation for being an elitist sport already. The $52,000 Garia Edition Soleil de Minuit will debut before a crowd of appropriately affluent drivers at the luxury show Top Marques in Monaco on April 15. The eco-friendly golf buggy features a carbon roof, custom paint, hand-stitched leather seats, and numerous options including a dashboard refrigerator -- to avoid trips back to the clubhouse. Built with a frame from the same supplier as Aston Martin and a gearbox from Ducati's supplier, the ultra-luxury set of wheels is sure to generate envy on the links, whether or not it keeps the ball out of the sand trap. However the Garia comes without airbags as standard -- in the event of unforeseen collisions. Golf champions take note. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Injured Michael Sim out of Masters golf Posted: 02 Apr 2010 01:20 PM PDT AP Michael Sim has withdrawn from the Masters because of a right shoulder injury, which has kept him out of golf for the past month. Sim was to have made his Masters debut. The 25-year-old Australian is one of the few players to have qualified for the Masters from world ranking points earned on the Nationwide Tour. He had three Nationwide victories last year to earn promotion to the PGA Tour and was off to a strong start this season. He finished second to Ben Crane at Torrey Pines in January. He is expected to be sidelined for another month. Sim will not be replaced at the Masters, the only major that does not have alternates. His withdrawal on Friday reduces the expected field to 97.
