Miyazato, from Japan, won the HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Malaysia, using a final-round 3-under-par 69 Sunday to hold off a charge from American Cristie Kerr. She won the LPGA season-opening Honda PTT in Thailand the previous week. She had one LPGA regular-tour title before this season opened but won 15 times on the LPGA of Japan Tour and opened 2010 ranked No. 8 in the world. The early-season success moved her to a No. 3 ranking. She displaced Norwegian Suzann Pettersen, the runner-up in Thailand, knocking her to No. 4. Kerr moved up one spot, switching places with Taiwanese Yani Tseng, to fifth. Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, who finished tied for 18th in Thailand and tied for 38th in Malaysia, was still the top-ranked women's player and South Korean Jiyai Shin, who tied for third in Malaysia, remained No. 2. The lower section of the Top 10 also stayed the same with Swede Anna Nordqvist in seventh, followed by Americans Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie and Angela Stanford. | Golf prodigy Michelle eager to play here (The New Straits Times) Posted: 01 Mar 2010 10:22 AM PST 2010/03/02 KUALA LUMPUR: Women's golf sensation Michelle Wie yesterday confirmed her participation in the inaugural US$1.8 million (RM6.7 million) Sime Darby LPGA of Malaysia championship on Oct 22-24 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). Michelle said: "I am very excited about my first visit to Malaysia as I have heard nothing but good things about the country and its warm hospitality. "I think it is fantastic that the LPGA is branching out into other parts of the world such as Asia. I started my 2010 season in Southeast Asia so it will be great to come back later in the year and try to see more of this region, especially Malaysia." She played in Thailand in February and then in the HSBC Women's Champions Tournament in Singapore last week, finishing tied for 15th. Michelle, 20, is hoping for more favourable weather conditions when she returns to Kuala Lumpur. "It was quite hot, but I am getting used to it after playing in Thailand and Singapore. However, I hope the weather will not be too hot, a moderate 28 would be fine!" said Michelle, drawing laughter from the gallery. "We can control the rain in Malaysia, but sorry, not the temperature," replied someone from the gallery. The 20-year-old turned pro when she was 16, and last year enjoyed a standout rookie season on the LPGA Tour, earning her first victory at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico with a 13-under 275. She then helped lead the US team to a Solheim Cup victory. "Sime Darby is honoured to be associated with this prestigious world class event which we will have the privilege of hosting at our very own KLGCC," said Sime Darby executive vice president, property division, Datuk Tunku Putra Badlishah. "The confirmation of Michelle Wie is a testament to the reputation that Malaysia has as a world class venue for international sporting events," said Robbie Henchman, senior vice president of IMG. A deal was signed yesterday. which gave Sime Darby and KLGCC a three-year deal to host one leg of the LPGA event. -- By Jugjet Singh
