Golf Academy teaches youth about the sport

Posted: 11 Sep 2010 02:02 AM PDT

The Simonds Golf Academy is kicking off classes next week.

Joe Simonds, head coach of the La Quinta High School golf team, will be offering the academy for the fifth consecutive year at Woodhaven Country Club in Palm Desert.

Although the course is in Palm Desert and Simonds coaches La Quinta High, he said he attracts students from all over the Coachella Valley.

"It's convenient for parents. We try to keep them in a good atmosphere and a good practice program where they can keep their games going and get them around other kids that they're going to know, so they can exchange numbers and play golf together," Simonds said.

Two levels of instruction include the L'il Academy, which offers lessons for children from second to fifth grade, and the Middle School Workout.

L'il Academy is offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays. The cost is $120 per month. The Middle School Workout is offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and costs $80 per month.

Simonds also gives private instruction by appointment for $99 per month.

For the L'il Academy, Mondays are practice days, and students play on the course on Fridays. For the Middle School Workout, students primarily play on the course.

"The concept is to get them ready for high school golf," Simonds said.

Instruction begins Monday, but there is no end date for the academy; members can continue taking lessons as long as they want, Simonds said.

Each level is composed of 12 to 20 kids, but space is limited.

"We don't want to get too many kids," he said.

In addition to Simonds, two pros assist in the instruction, as well as members from the La Quinta High School boys golf team.

"It's really cool that the team can help out, the kids really look up to them," he said.
