BRADENTON, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 06/07/10 -- IMG Academies today announced the creation of the IMG Leadbetter Junior Golf Tour -- an elite avenue for junior golfers to compete at some of the nation's top courses, while gaining invaluable exposure to college- and professional-style golf.

Debuting August 13-15, 2010, at the Waldorf Astoria Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., the Tour will feature 20 stops in its first season, and is expected to offer nearly double that number in upcoming seasons. The Tour will be independently operated by IMG Academies -- home to seven sport academies, including the IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy led by legendary coach David Leadbetter.

"We designed this Tour to help the growing demand within the junior golf community for high-level events staged on challenging, top-rated courses across the country," said Sam Zussman, Managing Director of IMG Academies. "Consistent with the mission of IMG Academies, we will measure this Tour's success by the opportunities it creates for personal growth and overall development, as well as by the level of access to collegiate and professional golf it provides our junior members."

Each Tour event will span three days (Friday-Sunday), with the majority of tournaments featuring stroke play competition. Jumpstarted by juniors enrolled at the prestigious IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy, the member roster is attracting the nation's top talent, including two-time Rolex Junior Player of the Year, 15-year-old Victoria Tanco: "This is an exciting opportunity for me to compete on top courses with some of the best junior golfers on the circuit. It's one more step in helping me toward my dream of joining the LPGA Tour and becoming the best player in the world someday."

The Tour, which will stage tournaments across the country with a focus on the Southeast and Southwest regions, will receive recognition in the form of Performance Based Entry (PBE) status for all of its events from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). This gives the Tour's junior competitors the additional opportunity to earn their way into prestigious AJGA events throughout the season. The Tour will adopt the AJGA Code of Conduct and Rules Card System, as well as introduce its own Tour Ranking System.

David Leadbetter will work with the Tour's juniors via clinics and seminars to aid them in their quest to achieve athletic excellence. Leadbetter, one of the world's top golf instructors, has been instrumental in the growth and development of the game's most successful players on the PGA TOUR, LPGA Tour, European PGA Tour, and Champions Tour.

Mark Steinberg, IMG Golf's Global Managing Director, views the Tour as the "missing cog within IMG's prolific golf event business." Continued Steinberg, "We have been strengthening our golf business for more than 40 years - The IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy continues to attract top talent, and graduate the next generation of movers and shakers within the golf industry. The IMG Leadbetter Junior Golf Tour will now provide a platform for these and other talented youth to compete and continue their personal growth."

Under Armour, the official apparel provider of IMG Academies, will provide apparel to all participating juniors as part of a larger membership package. The offering will also include a number of golf media subscriptions and a complimentary evaluation with the National Collegiate Scouting Association. Additional key sponsor announcements are expected in the coming months.

Golf-Lowry and Montgomerie shoot 62s to lead Open qualifying

LONDON, June 7 (Reuters) - Shane Lowry and Colin Montgomerie fired record-equalling 62s to lead the way in British Open International Final Qualifying (Europe) on Monday.

Irish professional Lowry carded his eight-under-par 62 on the Old Course as he topped two-round qualifying on 11-under 129 at Sunningdale on the outskirts of London.

European Ryder Cup captain Montgomerie's 62 came on the more difficult New Course as he finished joint second on 131 with fellow Scot Andrew Coltart.

Montgomerie has never missed a British Open since making his debut in 1990 at St Andrews, venue of next month's championship.

"It is a special place, no question, and I'm just glad the opportunity has been taken," said the eight-times European number one.

"I said to my caddie I'll be 47 when the Open comes round and this will probably be my last opportunity to play the Open at St Andrews."

Lowry, who was an amateur when he won last year's Irish Open, was delighted to clinch his debut in a major championship.

"St Andrews is going to be great," he said. "I said at the start of the year it's the one tournament I wanted to play".

The other seven qualifiers were Britons Gareth Maybin and Bradley Dredge, Spanish pair Jose Manuel Lara and Ignacio Garrido, Argentina's Tano Goya, Dane Thomas Bjorn and Marcel Siem of Germany.

GOLF ROUNDUP / Rose surges from 4 back at Memorial

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 05:39 AM PDT

Message from Five Filters: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Justin Rose joined the English revival in golf Sunday, rallying from a four-shot deficit to win the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, with a flawless final round for his first victory in seven years on the PGA Tour.

It was the second straight year the Memorial winner came from four shots behind. Tiger Woods did it a year ago, and the 29-year-old Rose was equally impressive. He played bogey-free at Muirfield Village for a 6-under-par 66 and a three-shot victory over Rickie Fowler.

Rose tapped in for par on the 18th, thrust his fist in the air and slammed it down, a moment long overdue.

"I've had a few close calls over time, and you start to sometimes wonder why you can't get it done," Rose said.

It was his 162nd start in a PGA Tour event, dating to a memorable performance as a 17-year-old amateur in 1998, when he tied for fourth at Royal Birkdale in the British Open.

Fowler, the 21-year-old rookie trying to become the youngest winner on the course Jack Nicklaus built, fell apart briefly on the back nine to fall three shots behind, and he never caught up. He closed with a 73 to finish runner-up for the second time this year.

Rose ran off three straight birdies to make the turn, saved par with a 20-footer on the 10th to keep his momentum, then seized control over the next hour despite making only one birdie.

Woods, the defending champion and a four-time winner, closed with a 72 and tied for 19th, 12 shots behind. It was his worst finish at the Memorial since 2002.

It has been a big year for England, from Lee Westwood rising to No. 3 in the world to Ian Poulter winning his first World Golf Championship and Luke Donald winning last week in Spain.

Price right: After tough finishes the last two years, Nick Price grabbed an early lead at the Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, Iowa, and never let it go.

Price shot a 4-under 67 to beat Tommy Armour III by four strokes.
