Golf Notes: Hemlock's Doug Temple shooting for his "doctorate" in golf

Posted: 27 May 2010 06:13 AM PDT

After seven years of teaching golf to kids in the Tri-City area, Doug Temple is going back to school himself.

Temple, the 38-year-old Hemlock native, became the head pro at Indian River Golf Club in northern Michigan earlier this year, ending his tenure as the head of the Golf For Life junior program.

It's the first step in a prolonged continuing education process for Temple; he's currently working on a specialty golf certification in golf operations from the PGA, and hopes to complete the PGA's Master Professional Program in golf operations in the next three years.

"It's kind of like getting your doctorate degree in golf," Temple said of the Master Professional Program.

Receiving that certification will put him in elite company. Master Professional status is the highest level offered by the PGA of America, and only 327 people have graduated from the program since its inception in 1969. The only local pro to have the certification in recent years, Temple said, is Mark Black, the former Fortress Golf Club professional who is currently teaching at Arizona State.

The climax of the masters certification for Temple's career path is demonstrating and documenting his techniques in operating a golf club — hence Temple moving on from the Golf For Life program to a head professional job.

"It's similar to a thesis for a doctorate degree," said Temple, who was previously the head pro at Celebration Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., and the Mount Pleasant Country Club after graduating from Ferris State.

Yet pursuing golf's highest education level meant leaving the Golf For Life program he started in 2003. While Temple has two Golf for Life camps scheduled at Indian River this summer, he will be handing over the golf for life duties to Pete Bishop and Jim Ankenbrandt, along with several other local golf instructors.

"I love working with the junior programs," Temple said. "It's still a passion of mine, and we still have some programs up here.

"I didn't want it to come to an end, so we've got some more people running it."
