| Golf-Tiger ready to play Couples again after trouble and strife (Reuters via Yahoo! Sports) Posted: 31 Mar 2010 10:03 AM PDT By Andrew Both HUMBLE, Texas, March 31 (Reuters) - Fred Couples, one of golf's most experienced campaigners and the U.S. Presidents Cup captain, will play a U.S. Masters practice round with Tiger Woods at Augusta National on Monday. Couples said he was not sure what time he and Woods would play on Monday, speculating that it might not be until after the disgraced world number one's 2pm (1900 BST) press conference. "I've played with him six or eight times the last 10 years in a practice round there, so it's not like I'm trying to get around him," said the 1992 Masters champion. "He's the best player in the world, he's won it a bunch of times, he knows how to play the course, and even at my age I still learn some of the nuances about Augusta, and that's why I'm playing with him." Couples said he expects four-time winner Woods to come out with all guns blazing at the Masters, which will be the world No. 1's first tournament in nearly five months, since reports of marital infidelity first surfaced. "We all know he made a mistake and we'll see how he overcomes it. I'm a friend of his, not his counsellor but I know at Augusta he'll be ready to go." HOT STREAK Couples also has no doubt Woods will be part of the American team at next year's Presidents Cup against a World team, but is not quite so sure Woods will be on board for this year's Ryder Cup in Wales. "I believe he's ready to start playing and I know all the team mates will want him on there but I don't know." Couples, 50, was speaking ahead of the Houston Open that starts on Thursday. He arrived here on a hot streak after winning the past three tournaments on the Champions Tour for seniors aged 50 or over. Couples attended a press conference with PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who announced that Couples and Greg Norman would return as respective captains for the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in Australia next November. Couples guided the Americans to victory against the Norman-led International team at last year's event in San Francisco. | Spring is the season of hope, even for my golf game (Chicago Tribune) Posted: 31 Mar 2010 06:51 AM PDT In what apparently is a new rite of spring for me, last weekend I stared down my local golf course. Neither the course nor the driving range was open. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for a little one-on-one time with my personal, 18-holed monster. Just as the arrival of spring brings the renewal of hope for Chicago baseball fans, so too does it bring the hope of not being so haplessly incompetent at golf as I was last year. I will probably never feel as good about my game the rest of the year as I did sans clubs in that empty parking lot. It was perfect, but I will tarnish that perfection with my ineptitude. That, after all, is the torment of golf. I took up the sport two years ago, and although I'm a natural left-hander, I have learned to play right-handed. I bat and play guitar right-handed, and some would say I have mastered neither. I blame my slow start in golf on inner-brain confusion, and I am working through it at a snail's pace. After a particularly bad outing, I am often tempted to buy left-handed clubs and give them a try. How much worse could it be? If I had any sense, I'd sell my clubs on Craigslist and just walk away. But like the kid in " Slumdog Millionaire" who plunged through the hole in the bottom of the outhouse, I'm too committed to give up until I get what I came for. None of that matters right now, anyway. So far this season, I am even par. That will undoubtedly change the moment I play the first hole. On the other hand, maybe my three golf lessons in Florida at PGA National have changed everything. I did pretty well on the driving range, from what I can remember. Then again, maybe I didn't. It's all hazy to me at this time of the year, when I hide past failure from myself like Easter eggs. I do recall devouring a delicious bacon cheeseburger in the lobby bar of the PGA National Resort & Spa. I recall wondering if Tiger Woods had ever eaten one, and if he had the temerity to hit on my attractive waitress. There is currently a Cubs ad slogan that reads "Year 1." That seems a little bit overly optimistic and a bit dismissive, but I get the point. The Ricketts family has reset the Cubs odometer to zero. I wish them only the best of luck with that. I would just like to add that urinals at the ballpark would be a nice way to commemorate "Year 1." It is dehumanizing to be standing side by side with a stranger without the benefit of a porcelain buffer. To the White Sox I say: Up your game and put some stanchions between those urinals. Let's show the North Side what privacy is all about. Whatever you endeavor to enjoy this summer, I fervently hope you will pause and marvel at the perfect state in which it currently exists. As soon as you pop your boat into the water, it's a gas-guzzler (or the sail rips). Biking along the lakefront will inevitably become an obstacle course filled with walking, human land mines. Many of these land mines will be out-of-towners who will wander into your path. You'll end up in the emergency room or the courtroom, or both. It's the time of year for hope and renewal. It won't be long until everybody is complaining about the heat and the humidity and bringing goats out to Wrigley in hopes of ending the "Year 1" curse. | Judge rejects golf lawsuit filed by Giuliani's son (Sports Illustrated) Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:03 PM PDT DURHAM, N.C. (AP) A federal judge is dismissing a lawsuit filed after the son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was dismissed from the Duke University golf team. U.S. District Judge William Osteen Jr. said in an order Tuesday that the offers used to lure Andrew Giuliani to the school did not constitute an enforceable contract. A magistrate judge had also recommended dismissal of the case last year. Giuliani had argued that a former golf coach had promised him an opportunity to compete and a right to access Duke's athletic facilities. He alleged that Duke's golf coach manufactured accusations against him to justify kicking him off the team in 2008, when he was a junior. An attorney for Giuliani didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
| Top 20 golf courses in South Carolina (The Charlotte Observer) Posted: 31 Mar 2010 09:36 AM PDT View our Top 20 list in an interactive map Among the most identifiable images in American golf is that of the 18th hole at the Harbour Town Golf Links. Laid alongside the Calibogue Sound and with a green framed from behind by the famous red and white-striped lighthouse, it is an instantly familiar image to golfers. If that were all there is to Harbour Town, it would be plenty but there is much more to the Pete Dye-Jack Nicklaus design that earns it the No. 1 spot in our rankings of the 20 best courses in South Carolina. Harbour Town proves that golf courses dont have to be 7,500 yards long to be challenging. Winding between live oaks and dotted with lagoons, Harbour Town is a treat to play and features one of the best collections of par-3 holes anywhere. These rankings are purely subjective. They arent done by a panel or through a numerical grading system that ranks a dozen different elements. Ive been fortunate to play many of these courses and those that I havent, such as Kiawah Islands Cassique Course, Ive heard and read enough about to add them to the list. The list isnt meant to be the definitive ranking of South Carolina courses but its not far off other lists. The Dunes Golf and Beach Club ranks second for a couple of reasons its a terrific course and its always been among my favorite places to play. When the inevitable question comes up about where would you go if you had only one round to play, the Dunes comes to mind. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island has hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and will host the 2012 PGA Championship. Golf experiences dont get much better than at the Ocean Course, which I considered for No. 1. Long Cove on Hilton Head Island is outstanding and Yeamans Hall is a bit like going back in time. If you ever get the chance to play either, dont miss it. The rest of the list is filled with special places to play, whether its Bulls Bay, Palmetto or the Links Course at Wild Dunes. Everyone has their own list. Weve provided a place for you to add your thoughts. Wed love to hear them. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
